We also have CCW, I usually carry a 22 with me. But we also have a vicious sounding dog. The deaf Jack Russell, but he will run and hide. When we get a place that says "No weapons. No guns. etc" it goes into the safe.

The only thing that has been attempted. When we camped since the late fifties was a loaf of bread. Had to chase that raccoon for about 100 feet before he gave up.

I just safely returned from a very harrowing experience that happened during a rather short hike to only explore a possible new route to my favorite hiking trail that was less dangerous from rockslides that happen very often on my usual route. It was only about a 30 minute hike, so I only stuffed a single .22 short into the barrel of my Jetfire before slipping it into my pocket along with an 8-shot magazine of .25ACP in case I needed it. Since there was nobody else around at the time, I had to rely on my idiot brother-in-law to take along as my “buddy” for the short trip.

We hadn’t gone more than a half-mile into the heavy timber when, out of nowhere, there suddenly came a huge sow grizzly bear crashing through the brush and charging straight toward us at full speed. I guess she must have had a cub around because she was mad as heck and coming to kill both of us in an instant. There was no place to run, no time to run (can’t outrun a grizzly anyway), and I’m standing there with nothing but a tiny little Beretta Jetfire loaded with one .22 short in my hand.

Laugh if you wish at its effectiveness, but it only took one well-placed shot to my brother-in-law’s kneecap and I was able to escape a major bear attack by only walking away at a brisk pace

I LOVE THIS STORY...

CCW when camping in the states and a declared shootgun when traveling through Canada. Have never needed either but I believe in being prepared.

Guns...

If you are very familiar and very comfortable and very proficient in the use of a firearm, then, by all means, carry one. However, camping presents many, many unforeseen and uncontrollable variables. Think about this.

Grew up in firearms. And have own a few myself aswell as my wife.
We never carry on the road.Dogs once in a while.
But everyone should have the right to carry.
Only pulled my 9mm one time .As a person on drugs broke into our camper parked at home .As i walked in he was passed out not waking up. Yelled at the Wife called the police and he said it was his camper.Held him at gun point until the police came
place was a mess and the police said he was a meth head

Self Defense

Quote:
Typically my method of defense is tossing the perp a beer from the fridge though... not many other methods are legal while intoxicated! So I dare you ALL TO BRING IT ON!
^ this. And if a beer don't cheer em up, a gentle tap with my 10lb extinguisher usually does the trick

My dog is sooo tuff, he usually pees on me....

Keep a can by the door in the rv and at home. Don't be surprised to see us answer the door with "can in hand".

I have that one in the 22 magnum. I have thing about miniatures. Yes, we carry (not that cute little thing though) when we travel and/or camp. If an RV park announces no guns or weapons we drive on to find one that affords us self defense.

Face it folks, these big expensive tin cans we camp in aren't all that secure. That goes double to triple for those camping in hybrids. Escpecially for those who boondock in undeveloped areas.

It's not always humans that present the threat. Take that from a person who experienced the *foul* breath of a bear huffing in her face through thin canvas as a 9 year old girl. That sound and scent has stuck with me my entire life and the sheer terror was unimaginable unless you've been there. Yes, Dad was carrying but didn't have to shoot the bear. The sound of the gunshot was enough to convince him that he didn't want Weezer for a snack.

To date DH and I haven't had the misfortune of facing a physical threat while camping. I pray that continues to be true, but if it doesn't.....

The absolute best defense you can take is simple pure "Common Sense".

Don't sell yourself short, listen to that little voice in your head. It will more often than not warn you of impending situations.

Same thing the colonist did when they sensed an invasion by intruders who wanted what they had not earned.
