Semi Emergency

OK.... Waited til the last minute to open up my Shamrock 233S for a trip coming up tomorrow and found that the canister for my water filter had cracked. I thought I winterized but blowing the lines out does not mean this canister becomes free of water. In all honesty, didn't even know it was there til water was spewing out from under the bed upon doing a water check. So here is my delimna...dealer has no instock replacements and we are still going camping regardless. Suggestions for quick and simple repair???

Replace it with one from Home Depot or Lowes or remove it and connect the two pipes until you can get a replacement, you may want to get an in-line one for the hose instead. You'll probably pay about the same for a new one from the Home Improvement stores as you'll pay for the canister replacement.

Go to any hardware store and get a brass 3/4 pipe coupling
and some teflon tape.
Remove the fittings from your old filter and connect the
lines together via the coupling.
When you have more time, go to Home Depot or Lowes
like Charlie said and get a whole new filter.
I put hose fittings in mine and use it outside on the
hose rather than way deep inside my crawl thru storage
area.

(I tried a plastic coupling to replace/bypass my old
filter but it leaked so I tightened it and then it cracked.
Brass won't crack or rust.)

the canister should be a standard size available at any good hardware store. just take the old one in and match it.
don't think it's a RV-specific thing.

I say remove it and use an external filter in your water supply line. We did this because of the mess (IMO) of winterizing and removing the canister etc. Had the dealer remove the filter in our 2011 upon delivery and when I winterized it was a much simpler process.

I removed my canister & if I recall it right it was a 1/2 inch coupling (brass)

I agree.

Getting the old one out in my camper involved CUTTING the tubing because the pex fittings were crimped in place and the elbows could not be rotated to unscrew them. You will need to buy PEX push on elbows and a section of PEX tubing to make this work.

herk7769 sound like I got lucky in our trailer all I had to do is unscrew the brass fittings from each side of the canister (both straight) & then screw them into the brass pipe thread fitting. Now I don't have to crawl under the bed to change filters! I am sure that was a sight to see "a old man working doubled up under the bed"

Thanks to all of you for such timely and informative responses. It was easier than I expected. This camping thing is a breeze with a forum board of experience to draw from. Lowes had the exact replacement but given time I will splice and add external one. Now off to Buck Creek in NC...can't wait.
