Short distance tow question

I have my TT stored just outside the state park and plan to haul it to the camp ground no more then 5 miles if that with the weight distribution hitch on. I however don't plan to use the anti sway for that distance and issues with this plan?

Sway is often induced by how the trailer is loaded coupled with the speed (wind/air pressure) against the trailer. So unless you are driving above 55 or so, then going 5 miles at 45 or so is not likely going to induce sway. In all my years of towing I never have had a sway issues below 50 mph. Others might have, but I have not.

I routinely do this for almost the same distance. I do not exceed 40 mph, all local roads to my house from the storage location. You should be fine as long as you do not go fast.

There are alot more factors, as pointed out above, than just how far you're going to tow. Of course the farther the towing distance, the higher chance of something bad happening. But anything can happen at anytime no matter how far you're towing. Just take the proper precautions and be safe for yourself and others.

Just bear in mind the old saying that "Most accidents happen within 5 miles of home". Be very cautious! Enough said. Randy

Like stated, most sway is related to speed, use good judgement and if that judgement indicates to hook them up, then do it. I personally don't have sway control on my trailer and have never had sway with my 23' trailer on a long wheelbase, even at my travel speed of 65mph, you should be fine.

We have a rockwood 2011 mini lite 1809s and I dont use an anti sway. I have the equalizer reese 550 and I have never experienced any swaying on the highway even in high wind and being passed by 18 wheeler. But when I had single axe trailers an anti sway device was very necesary.

That was my thought when I needed to tow my 30 footer down to the repair shop. It was only a couple of miles......while pulling off the expressway at about 40 mph, I was surprised to feel the trailer coming around....after some fancy steering wheel corrections, I got it back under control, but it was pretty scarey.
You have the sway device, only takes a couple of minutes to hook it up, WHY TAKE A CHANCE?

last weekend i towed our 30 ft puma to the local state park for "our first trip" Only beacause its 2 lane and 50 mph or less for 8 miles . No semi traffic. It went fine. that was with a draw tight wd system. I will now be using a 12k equalizer brand wd hitch. no extra sway bars...

The shorter and lighter the camper, the less of a chance of swaying. I experienced the same thing with 2 Coleman pop ups that I owned. The first one I had was a Pioneer, short closed box, about 12 feet or so, and never any type of sway apparatus whatsoever. Traded it for a Utah, one of the biggest Coleman/Fleetwoods with a slideout, and had to add a side mounted friction brake sway bar controller. Bought my new Flagstaff 30 ft. V lite W/2 slide outs, the friction brake sway controller was highly inadequate- scared the mess out of me! Bought the Reese dual cam sway bar system for it, and all is well.

We pull our 1809s at 55 mph. No problem at all . The trailer is only 20 feet long and the center of gravity is almost perfect if not one of the best in all trailers on the road today. And also I can tell you that we pull our mini lite with a 2009 uplander fully equipped for trailering. I dont have a sway control and I realy dont need it. Never had the sensation of swaying in all the times we went camping, secondary roads or highways.
