Smart use of Smart Car!

Something I've never seen, a smart car mounted behind a Freightliner tug with 5ver bringing up the rear.

Shame I can't see the tag on the smart car.
Maybe we could track him down and ask.

Take a look at this website, he builds them. I have been wanting one of these since I first saw them. They talk about hauling a smart car or motorcycles on the back.

They are located in Canada. The prices are unbelievably low, but they are rebuilt/customized trucks with 500-600,000 miles on them.

I bookmarked them for future use...

Yea, when we were in Yellowstone it was REAL tempting to make a little side trip up to Calgary and take a test drive. Problem with that is then I would probably REALLY want one!

I wonder if you would have to pull into weigh stations? Neat Idea, I could see me having one of them.

As I understand it, only commercial vehicles or "For Hire" vehicles are required to stop unless the signage directs otherwise. I have seen tractors pulling 5th wheels not stop and they all had signs on the cab that said "Not For Hire."

Oh I see, so I suppose you would not need a cdl either? Only problem I see, is that it might be an awful tight fit in some camp grounds, but on the other hand it usually is anyway.

Rigs like that are usually for "full timers" and only go to limited places that handle over large rigs. While a CDL is not required some states have length or total gross weight limits, that above that require a DL rider. CA comes to mind.

Most of those HDTs are re- registered as MHs after doing some renovations to them. Go here and you will see a lot, HDT - Escapees Discussion Forum Ask questions all you like and the members will answer.

we have a member hear that pulls with a HDT, but I don't think he has been on for the last year or so.

Here is Bear's profile with a picture of his rig.. Forest River Forums - View Profile: Bear

I couldn't find an album for him.

Some of these HDTs cost half of what a new pick up costs. Some may have close to a million miles on them. Some owners drop one of the rear axles and depending on wheel cut can turn tighter than a 1 ton dually. The guy in Calgary RV Haulers | RV Haulers gets his HDTs, takes them into the shop and cleans them up, mechanically and body wise. Have a look at his site. There are a myriad of things that can be and are done to these big trucks. I'd have one tomorrow if my better half would let me.....

It is my understanding that requirements can very greatly state to state. For example, in IL I was told by a state trooper that any vehicle over 40K gross, commercial or private, MUST stop to weigh.

Other states require a CDL over 40K gross as well. Other states require a CDL for anything with air brakes.

It is truly a tangled patchwork of laws when it comes to towing heavy.

Even though it seems to be tangle of state laws, if you are licensed in your HOME state, then you should be able to drive into and out of any state you visit. Same thing for motorcycles save the helmet law, then you have to abide by the state you are in. So I guess what I am trying to say is, if your rig is good in FL then you should be able to drive to CA and not be hassled for not having a CDL. I may not be understanding it correctly, esp. in the case of a MH over 40' in CA. Is a CDL needed if you have a MH of 45' but licensed in FL?

Smart Car on Freightliner

Smart car left early this morning but I managed to get back over thehre and get some snap shots. The car was very close in length to the beam of the truck frame. It looked like a hydraulic or elec rig to launch his capsule. Also certainly looked like a custom conversion, no obvious maker plates bragging about the disign/build. Enjoy!

Got this guy coming down in our annual 4th of July parade here in the city. This is a relatively newer Volvo conversion. Very nice.

That is something, a Smart Car weighs what around 1,300 lbs and a standard Golf cart weighs around 600 lbs and a street lecal Golf Cart weighs around 800 lbs, so if a golf cart had a body then I quess then it could be called a " Smart Cart"
