Smokers / Grills

Good Day Fellow Road Worriers.

I love cooking outdoors it just taste so much better. I have a gas grill and now a smoker, My DW loves being on the road because I do all the cooking from breakfast to late night indulgence of wings. How many of you use a smoker while camping. I just don't want to look like a weirdo or rile up the neighbors.

No riling up from me as long as you share!

I'm a big time smoker at home and have a propane and an electric smoker. These are too cumbersome to take on the road so I am left with the grill and a smoker box with chips.

I cannot imagine someone being aggravated at the smell of food cooking on a smoker. Smoke on and enjoy! Your campsite, rig, family and money...as long as you are a "good neighbor" it is none of their business.

I really like the results of my smoker but because it's electric I do my smoking pre-trip and put portions onto Food Saver bags. If I was on shore power I'd have to think about what else is running.

Sometimes I use a smoker and by the third hour of smoking ribs the neighbors keep glancing over as they make burgers and dogs. There is nothing weird about eating well.

Are they looking for the source of the smell or the noise of a generator

I've seen my brother bring his barrel smoker when we have a specific meal planned calling for it. Takes 4 of us to lift it out of the bed of his truck, but it's worth it.

I've also seem him invert his portable fire bowl over the campground's fire-ring to make an impromptu smoker.

I have the Green Mountain Davey Crockett smoker that I usually carry, but think I'm going to switch over to a flat top griddle grill. Only because, those who I regularly camp with have the GM also. We usually have no less than 5 smokers between us.

We have a Big Green Egg. Actually, we have two. The one at home is a large and we take our mini max camping. They are versatile, and all around great to have! We can use it to smoke, grill, bake, and as a pizza oven. There isn’t much you cannot cook on or in one. In fact, we are camping this weekend where we just finished with an Eggfest. There are folks who love their Eggs and get together for tastings. Cooks are awarded first, second, third, and people’s choice awards. It’s a lot of fun! They have three tastings a day and cooks prepare breakfast, lunch, and dessert samples. I had the most tender prime rib I’ve ever tasted in my sixty years. It literally melted in my mouth. They have all sizes of Eggs, including an XXL that is used by restaurants and caterers.

Have large smoker at home. When we camp I take wood chips and soak them. I put the chips in foil and poke holes in it and lay it on our small propane grill. Works pretty good for smoke flavor

We use a real charcoal smoker at our home base but on the road we use our small propane bbq, put a small aluminum griddle on it, lay out our meat and surround it with water soaked wood chips and then just put it on the lowest setting and leave it alone.
I used to soak the wood chips in beer but nowadays you have to take out a mortgage if you want to have a cold one
