Panther Creek State Park in Morristown, TN is close. Very nice state park and still very close to the Smokies.

Big Meadows Rv Park in Townsend is one if our favorite campgrounds. Full hook up, quiet, easy to find, and very clean. We drive from Ohio to stay there every year. Try to get one of the river view or outside loop sites.

Pisgah National Forest
Our vote is for Pisgah National Forest.
We were there a year ago in the Spring visiting my brother-in-law who lives in Asheville. If your like us and like the more natural setting rather than the commercial you would like Pisgah.
Were able to get a 32' 5th wheel in no problem. Hosts were great.

We stayed at Honeysuckle Meadows RV Park and absolutely LOVED It. Our site had a long deck with a roof over half of it covering a picnic table. We are seniors and loved the quiet and shaded trees. Birds chirping every morning. Our site backed up to the woods.Beautiful view of the Smokies.
They don't have a store but there is a grocery store just down the road and a nice restaurant. It is about halfway between Pigeon Forge and Townsend.
Had full amenities and cable TV and good WIFI.

Cross Creek RV Park in Maggieville, NC is a great place if you want to stay on the south side where it is more quiet. You are north of town and away from the traffic. If you want to have a good time, rent a Polaris Slingshot for a day from Cabbage Rose in downtown Maggieville. It is a blast.

And if you find yourself in Maggieville need to go thru the Wheels Through Time museum. Some amazing machines in there.

Another one for Mama Gertie's. We also like USFS Lake Powhatan campground for the Asheville area though I suspect the reserved sites are likely full. They do have some first come, first served sites but I have no idea how quickly they go.

Yep- nice place. We were there for a week last month. Sites are huge and a quiet place. Easy access to everything in the area.
