Out of the blue a guy camping near the bath house about 100 feet away from us, at 10:00 on the dot bounded out of his camper, flashlight in hand demanding to know who we were and what we were doing.

I told him what we were doing, for the third night in a row, and invited him over to take a look.

All while his flashlight in our eyes is decidedly unwelcome.

I asked if we were disturbing him, if he was the host (He didn't answer, but he wasn't.) and he just grumbled something about it being unusual for people to hang out around a bath house. Never mind my camper was literally 100 feet away. He stomped back inside not to be heard from again.

And no, we weren't being loud, no music. Just pointing the telescope and describing what they were seeing although there was an enthusiastic "WOW!!" when I showed someone Saturn for the first time.

Self appointed watchdogs, gotta love em!
I think you handled it well. There is no telling what was going on in his mind as he was not communicating except for his displeasure. Good move not confronting him & just letting him go back to his camp site & be miserable by himself. Don't let one spoil it for everyone else. You might let the camp host know that you are setting up & invite them as well. Often they are excluded from camp fire events etc. because of their job. This is something they could easily join if only for a few minutes.

It's entirely possible that the old dude didn't even know it was a telescope, not a super-duper binocular (monocular).

In retrospect, don'tcha think #5 was a bit harsh?
You and others are being judgemental, which I consider kinda harsh. So no, I don't consider #5 harsh at all. If we ever meet I'll shake hands, we'll be friends, we can break bread, but at least for now the telescope is closed to you. My mind might change, but frankly I don't care to have someone standing to the side judging me then expecting to partake of that which I'm being judged for.

I could have invited kids into a dark corner with no traffic. We've all been to state park CGs. There's precious few lights, usually at communal areas. My only safe option was near the bath house, on the sidewalk.

So I chose a lit (Much to my unhappiness) area with many witnesses so I could share the night sky, a commodity we're quickly losing. I said group, further explained that parents were there.

Our campground watchdog watched the clock just so he could pop out at 10:00 and call me on the carpet. I found it funny.

Now I wish I had kept it to myself.

Have a good evening folks, to those that weren't judgmental, thank you and feel free to come around for a look!

"telescope is closed" to me? My heart just shattered in a gazillion pieces. Now that IS harsh! (chuckle)

Seriously?

I'll live over it. And FTR, life is all *about* judgments. Choosing to stop for that red light when you're the only one on the roads at 2AM, or easing on thru....that's a judgment call.

I simply stated I concur with others' opinions. I choose to err on the side of my better judgment. IRRC NO one said you shouldn't have been doing what you were doing, did they?

My concurrence remains.

Now you're just looking silly.

Judge not, lest ye be judged, right? I'm in a lit, public area, with a crowd of people, adults and kids.

But apparently I'm a peeping tom.

Or enticing kids.

Concur all you wish, but get off your high horse before I laugh at you getting clocked by a low limb.

Now wait a minute. I DID NOT CALL YOU A PEEPING TOM. Let's get this straight.

Yes, judge not lest YE BE JUDGED, which does not mean a person cannot judge, just that they should expect to be judged in return. I'm fine with that. But judge me on what I SAY, not what you're projecting that I said.

I don't ride high horses. I'm too short to mount a high horse without a step stool.

I also DID NOT SAY YOU WERE "ENTICING KIDS".

And, being so short, even if I DID ride a high horse it's not likely I'll get "clocked by a limb". Being a life long rider, I now prefer miniature horses anyway.

Now who looks silly. ENOUGH already.

You're dismissed.

See, here comes that limb already. You agreed with all of the above where peeping tom and luring ( I said enticing, which is the legal term.) were mentioned.

Stop it before it gets any worse, but it's my thread. You certainly will not dismiss me.

Geeze! When I read OP's first post I did not think he was doing anything wrong until some of you brought it up. And now I still don't. And I am usually pretty skeptical with my law enforcement background where deviant behavior is going on. Just a guy looking through a Telescope near a lighted bathroom. I am just glad that Rambo did not come out of the trailer with something other than a flashlight!

I think all the juice has been removed from this.
Gonna close this thread before someone says even more they will regret.

If the folks review this and think it should be reopened, I will.
