Southwest Summer + iPads

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone in the Southwest has some suggestions on traveling with electronic devices in the summer.

The kids use them in the truck while we are traveling from site to site, but once we arrive and set up camp, we usually do some site seeing or hiking. At that point, we don't need the iPads or iPods with us. If we are at a site with hookups, I could leave them in the trailer with the A/C on, but would prefer to not leave A/C on all day. I could take the devices with us, but it just adds weight when we're hiking (and we're carrying water). It would be great to leave them locked in the truck, but I'm concerned about the heat.

Any gadgets or ideas to keep electronic devices cool in a locked vehicle?

I don't believe you don't need to worry about keeping them cool; the issue with them is keeping them warm in winter. You don't want leave them in a vehicle that drops below freezing (not good for the battery).

Company I work for issues laptops and the IT guys always warned us of leaving them in a freezing car. Have never said a word about high temps.

Keep them out of direct sun and they will be OK at temps in the vehicle with the windows opened just a bit.

Same as above- we've never given one ounce of thought to high temperatures with our iDevices and have never had an issue.

I just found this Apple article that talks about high and low temperatures.

We have the same concern with the grandkids devices who live in Tucson. And as you know the temps in cars out here will melt most anything

We do leave the larger devices in the truck, out of the sun, and usually covered with something. Haven't had problems yet but sometimes when left for extended periods the devices will not come on until we cool them off under the a/c. I'm sure it's not good for them.

I am thinking about getting a cooling bag like in the link below but haven't done it yet:

If your concerned about the heat you could just insulate them with a blanket out of direct sunlight, or if you have an ice chest you are not using you could put them in there. Either way I don't think you will have a problem. But for piece of mind you could do that.

We keep one of these under the back seat of the truck and slide our electronic stuff in when necessary.

We use our iPhones, iPads, and iPods also for taking pictures and videos The newer ones have a nice lens in them and the grandkids take some great pictures and videos with them.

Get a carrying case for them and take them with you.

SE Arizona here. Have overheated my iPhone too many times. It takes just a few minutes on the dash or up on a visor. I've only overheated once with phone in passenger seat, but I realized after it happened that the sun was shining in through the window. Your electronics will be OK in your camper, even with a/c off. Don't leave Windows or vents open unless you have covers as we are in monsoon season and the rain can drench the inside with as little as 1/2" of an opening.
Carry and use a towel or steering wheel cover, and use some kind of windshield cover for even short stops.
