States visited vs Just passed Through

How does everyone count a state as being visited? Does it count if you simply passed through it? How about layover at a Walmart on your way to some place else? What criteria do you use to have officially "visited" a state?

I've spent at least some amount of time in just about every state east of the Mississippi River but alot of those were just a pass through on my way someplace else. Others have been quick day trips lasting only a couple of hours.

If I stop at a rest area in that state, then the sticker goes on my map. We usually end up staying one night on the return trip.

Ours is sleep at least one night, but everyone has their own rules.

Same and agree. Your map, your rules. There is no consistent standard.

The sticky state map police require an overnight and one meal in order for their sticker to be legally affixed to your camper.

Fortunately, their use-on-campers rules don't govern the FRF forum.

Many (most?) of us use the map generator at Visited States Map: States Visited Map Generator, Where I've Been Map, Colored Map of The United States, Map of States Visited. where their instructions include "Instructions: Check the states that you have visited, driven through, stayed in, rode through, you-name-it!"

Not likely in Texas. East to West is approximately 800 miles.

On my first trip to Europe I was flying from England to Spain and could clearly see France from 30,000 feet. I asked my work companion if I could consider that I had been to France and was told that I could NOT consider that I had been to France until I actually stepped foot onto their soil. I guess the same thing applies to states. Once you step foot onto a state, consider it that you have visited. I also like the person who said to make up your own rules.

Ours is a visited map. If we visit we put a sticker on it. We will sometimes park in one state and visit another.

DW rule - we have to camp in the new camper in the state to add the sticker. Not sure how to get the camper to Hawaii !

We've been to 48 of the 50 state with last two, the Dakotas planned for this fall. Have camped in 28 states over the last 50+ yrs. Not sure how to get the camper to Hawaii!

Visiting states

I am with DDC's post on this...
What rules?

We plan to travel to every state in the USA.
But for me.. I am content knowing where I have been and I don't like stickers on my vehicle or trailer.
My wife is determined to get a stamp for every National Park in her book and of course, I do whatever my "reason for living" wants.

My wife keeps a log book that journals our travels and experiences.
At first I did not appreciate it, but now I have to admit that I do enjoy going back and reading the log once in a while.

I do like the idea of a map on the inside wall that shows the tracks of places traveled to... I might do that someday.

Thanks
