Stephen C. Foster State Park

Can anyone give an opinion regarding camping at this park? It appears to be off the beaten track somewhat. Is access difficult? We are looking at spending a few days there mid-Nov. It seems there are some very interesting things to see and do.

If you haven't been camping in the deep South before, be advised that gators like little dogs, and gators are surprisingly fast. Watch where put your feet when you walk, especially at night, because rattlesnakes and moccasins roam about.

Also, don't leave any food unattended outside, day or night. The raccoons are professionals.

Take the ranger-guided boat tour. It's a different world.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago. You will have no access problems. Easy entry and large sites. A lot of them are pull thru. The park is just of I-75.

The park has a museum to Steven Foster. He wrote Way Down Upon the Suwannee River which flows right thru the park. Funny thing though, he never saw the Suwanee River. The museum only takes about an hour to tour along with the carroline bells.

There is nothing in White Springs to do. One restaurant, Big Belly BBQ, which was OK but nothing special.

They also, have music events, check out their schedule. All in all it is a nice park to relax and the bugs won't be,bad that time of year. Raccoons are raccoons! Professional burglars if you leave food about, especially after dark.

I see your coming from ON. What is your destination. Maybe other parks to recommend.

I would stay at Steven Foster as a base to relax and take in a little of the culture.

There's a Bourbon Trail in GA, too? I have only heard of the one in KY.

Just to make things clear are you talking Steven C Foster State Park in Fargo GA or Steven Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in White Springs FL? The are both fairly near each other (within 50 miles) and both offer camping.

Thx for the responses folks. I was referring to the park in GA. We will be heading to Charleston SC, Hunting Island & Jekyll Island. That is about as far south as we go this time round. The return will include Hickory Knob Hill in SC and then back up thru Wytheville, VA.

The plan is to get some miles under our tires for the first two or three days (to find some higher temps) so there will be some Casino & Walmart boondocking at the beginning and end of the trip. Will be hauling the bikes and clubs along.

Google maps puts us at 4300 km on the road. This is the third trip with the TT. I've got to wonder what we will forget.

You'll enjoy Jekyll Island this time of year...bring your bicycles as the island is very bike friendly

I agree Jekyll Island is very pretty and bike friendly. If you do make it over to Steven Foster in GA be sure you have everything you need before you get there. The closest Walmart is probably 50 or so miles away. There is a small convenience store in Fargo and a grocery store in Homerville 20 miles from Fargo, but that's it! You will be in what we call the flatwoods! I live 40 miles from the park and unfortunately I have never been to the park. It is on the edge of Okeefinokee Swamp which is the head waters for the Suwanee and the St Mary's rivers.
