Surge Guard questions

Hi...I have a 50 amp camper but I am seasonal at a campground that only has a 30 amp pedestal. I am not sure which one to buy and which end to convert the camper or pedestal?
Thank you

I think we need a little more information on what you want to do.
You can run your 50 A camper on a 30 A feed by getting a simple 50 to 30A dogbone.
You don't need to convert anything. You will be limited on what appliances you can run at the same time. More information on what you have for a camper would help a lot. If all you can get out of the pedestal is 30A you don't have much of a choice.

This might help if your buying the hard wire one it will run off 30 amp, so buy the 50 if you think you are going good to ever move the trailer a 50 amp will still work with 30 amp, but you still will be limited with power.

I bought the 50amp EMS hardwired for a 30 amp trailer. I figured/knew eventually I would move up and need it. 🤗

Thanks. I am trying to figure out if I should get 50 AMP or 30AMP Surge Guard and where to place the adapter/dogbone. The camper is on order so I want to make sure it is protected at the seasonal site. Thanks again

Surge Guard questions

I have a 30 amp plug at the house and my fiver is 50 amp. I purchased the 50 amp surge guard and use a 30 to 50 amp dog bone adapter and it works great. If you haven't purchased it yet I'd suggest the Progressive Industries unit over the Surge Guard unit as it has a lifetime warranty as opposed to a 1 year. If you do end up getting a Surge Guard then put some silicone at the point where the cord enters the unit to keep water out.

I would definitely get the 50....you can adapt easily and it will fit your trailer if they upgrade or you move it.

If your camper is 50 amp then get a 50 amp protector. Portable or permanent mount is your choice, either will work. Permanent is more convenient once installed. That way you are protected whether you plug into 50 or 30 amp (with dog bone.)

Research over the years always points to Progressive. Their customers service has always been very helpful.

We had a major issue with the power cord having an open neutral shortly after buying our Cedar Creek. We had a 50amp Surge Guard at the beginning of the cord which wasn't any help since the short was after it in the cord.

Had we had a hard wired Progressive surge protector (we do now) it would have caught the open neutral and protected the trailer.

I would strongly recommend the Progressive Industries hard wired surge protector matching the amp of your trailer.

Surge Guard questions

Still waiting for TT delivery, but got the PT50X surge protector to match the TT amp rating, then will use a 30M>50F dog bone adapter when 50amp is not available.
The portable surge may be best if you plan to use a generator, or if you plan to change RVs. The surge guards don't always work well with generators, as I understand.
The usual limit on a 50 amp unit with 30 amp service is that a 2nd AC would not be usable. YMMV
Get a good cable lock as a theft deterrent if you go portable!

Excellent Point!

If you have a generator there are instructions for installing either before or after the transfer switch.

I imagine that the portable unit could be plugged after the pedestal and a detachable power cord to confirm the integrity of the cord, once the pedestal is confirmed.
Sorry about your issue. I will certainly check my cord at PDI!

Definitely go with the 50 amp Progressive Industries unit over the Surge Gard, which is like a toy in comparison to it. You want to protect your rig, not the CG pedestal.

Sorry to say but we're not the brightest bulbs on the tree and had to learn our lesson the hard way. We now test every time before we plug into the trailer.

DKRITTER, you must've replaced that bulb with a new highly efficient LED bulb!
