I know that "surge guards" are less expensive, but please do yourself a big favor and pay the extra money for the "surge/voltage regulator".
I have the progressive industries EMS HW30c, ($240.00 was a large investment for us just for a block of plastic I thought), it has saved our TT from open neutral twice, open ground once, one surge, and one low voltage.
That piece of plastic has saved us thousands of dollars, ruined weekends, and major headaches.
The low voltage time our neighbor didn't fair to well, their AC unit was fried, poor guy.
Don't let the hardwire ones intimidate you, they are really not that hard to install if you are a "handy" type of person.

Can't express how much I agree.
