It looks like NC did this years ago this article is dated May 18th 2018:
No taxes on clothes, shoes and school supplies.
A tax-free weekend once existed in North Carolina.
Gov. Pat McCrory signed a bill into law in 2013 that got rid of the annual event.
The tax-free weekend helped shoppers not pay sales tax when purchasing school-related items.
Now, Sen. Valerie Foushee (D-Chatham) is trying to bring it back.
Read Senate Bill 713
“I see it as a way to bring relief to struggling families in North Carolina,” she said.
In 2015, she sponsored this bill but it went nowhere with the General Assembly.
She says she felt helpless.
“There are members of the General Assembly that are insensitive to the needs of some families,” Foushee said.
A new bill, Senate Bill 713, was introduced to Thursday. Foushee thinks it would help low-income families.
Jeremy Gilreath remembers when his family took advantage of the weekend.
“It helped us save money so that we were better able to meet the needs of like me and my sister for our classrooms, that overtime require more and more from parents and teachers,” he said.
South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia still have a tax-free weekend.
“I have a personal connection to my constituents and I believe I try to do what is in their best interest,” said Foushee.
After a bill is introduced, the next step is for legislators to decide whether to hear it and assign it to the appropriate committee.
