While it of course varies from place to place, here in PA all trailers with brakes require annual state safety inspection. They're checking lights, tires, brakes, emergency brake release, chains, etc. It's a safety inspection. Cost is $20 or so.
While it's easy to find a mechanic that's licensed to do trailer inspections, the station itself has to be licensed and PA can be picky on that - they want the inspection location to be indoors, on a level floor - few car repair places can fit a TT inside.
Should you bother? Absolutely. Partly because it's YOUR safety that they're checking on, but also for liability reasons - should you have an accident and your TT is not inspected as the law requires you may be liable for everything - your insurance has the perfect out to not pay a dime!
