The cost of propane

I am wondering what the cost of propane is around the country . I filled my 20lb tanks for around $7 in MT a couple of years ago and the price here in KY goes up and up. It is now going for $20 to $22. How can there be this much difference?? I think we are getting ripped off big time.

I just filled up 20gal tank in Albuquerque for about $7.50
Here in N. TX I pay about $13
When I was in Phoenix and Vegas last month I paid over $20.

Seems to still be all over the place.

If my tanks are empty, right around $15 in the Milwaukee area for #20 bottles.

a couple of weeks ago I paid $2.19/gallon at Tractor Supply in N KY... since there are about 4.5 gallons in a 20# tank, that is about $10 per 20# tank... another dealer down the street, a hardware store, fills 20# tanks for $16 flat, and 40# tanks for $26 flat, and has not changed the price in at least 10 years.

I have observed some Tractor Supply stores across the country will refill and charge a per gallon price, while others only sell it by the tank and do NOT refill your tank but instead do a swap like they do at Home Depot... that charge is usually around $20... which is not a bad deal IF your tanks are getting close to the 12 year re-inspection date...

Its a lot cheaper to refill than to exchange. Exchanges around here are $22 or so, refill is $2 per gallon. $2 x 4.5 = $9.

One place to check for refills even (yes always cheaper to refill than exchange) is tractor supply. They only charge for what actually goes in the bottle. So, for example, refilling one that is still 1/2 full is half as much as one that is empty. Some places charge same amount regardless of what is left in the bottle.

The cheapest I've found in the Milwaukee area is Uhaul. Every once in a while a local joint will run a good groupon sale for like $10.

For those doing exchanges look close. I learned something on this forum a few weeks back. Read the fine print they are only putting 15 pounds of propane in the 20 pound tank. (thats why it seems like a good deal sometimes.)

Paid $7.99 for 20 lb. re-fill a couple weeks ago (just North of Syracuse, NY). This place has a flat charge, doesn't matter if you are completely empty or near full.

The local propane/ammonia sales place for all the farmers around here charges $19 for a refill. I did a 180 and walked out the door.

Sorry guys, but the RV dealer down the road is charging $2 a gallon. Get real.

Here in western PA it's $13 to fill a 20# at the local bottled gas supplier. At least it was last November.

Payson Arizona - the entire city runs on piped propane. there is no piped natural gas. the local propane utility charges about $1.79 per gallon (no minimum) to refill cylinders. plus they give a free 20# refill after 5 paid refills. other refillers are in the $1.99 per gallon range. the exchange places are a lot more expensive. I pay just over $13 to refill a 30# cylinder.

That sounds like the best deal - if you're empty.

Kimber is correct, Broadway Joe.

You are probably only getting 15 pounds or propane at Wal-Mart's exchange for $15 ($1 per pound), but are getting the full 20 pounds at your refill place for $18 ($0.90 per pound) It's a better deal at the feed company when you realize this plus you get 25% more which will last you longer before the next refill?

Here's some recent links to threads explaining this:

I was just posting to show the relative prices. The op asked cost of propane.

No harm no foul.

You have to remember that they only put 80% in any size tank. So a 20 lbs tank will only have 16 lbs
