I'm ok with the dragon drive- looks like fun, actually.

But why risk such a beautiful creation of the Heaven's Gate steps? One wrong move and he rolls it backwards down- destroying the steps. I mean, he made it and that's great- but the risk to reward... I don't get.

I'd bet it was all mathematically figured to climb it just fine. If not they would not of attempted it. Demonstrations like this are performed all over the world sometimes with manmade obstacles. Jeep for one has a travelling show that shows how all their vehicles can tackle off camber and hill climbs. At times only 2 tires are on the ground and they run the course with a load of volunteer passengers that usually waited on line for an hour.
Being an off-road rock crawler enthusiasts I don't impress easy and don't see the big deal.

They answered that in the article:

Perhaps an even more intriguing question is how did they get the car back down the steps? Luckily the curious journalists from Motoring Magazine were able to get a response from Land Rover who said, “The RR Sport was reversed slowly down the steps in a controlled way using the safety cables.”

Is that the white-knuckle experience everyone talks about? Heck, I'd do that with my eyes closed.

If someone else was driving.

I did this one on my first trip with my fifth wheel on the way to Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL. It was exciting enough.

Wow – that’s absolutely scary! I’m not quite sure if I’d like to do that at all. I’m with some of the other people here – first, why would you risk the natural steps for something like this? And, for two, how in the world would you even start the process of getting back down the mountain when all was said and done? Really curious about all of that!

The article said they went down in reverse with safety cables attached.

The safety cable was there to prevent this exact scenario. Were he to lose traction and begin to travel backward, the one-way cable dogs engage and stop rearward travel.

Supposedly it was only there for going down- going up, we are led to believe that there wasn’t one....
