The Worst Part of Camping

The worst part of wilderness/forest camping…ticks, mosquitoes, gnats, no-see-ums, and biting flies. BUGS…ARGH!! I hate biting bugs.

Bugs are a PITA for sure but the worst part is having to pack up and head home.

True, even if you're retired. And packing up in the rain makes it even worse.

I'm totally retired and if it's raining I may not pack up. Just stay until it stops raining. At least enough to pack up and not have everything damp and musty when I get home.

Bugs? Pfft. A can of Deep Woods Off will take care of them. Packing up and heading home is surely saddening, but not the worst part.

For me, the worst part is backing the camper into the driveway when we get home. I'm usually tired and brain dead (or... more brain dead than usual) from the trip. The wife skips out as soon as we get home to use the restroom, leaving me to put it up by myself. The street is a bit narrow, the hole I put it in requires millimeter precision, and if you hired an engineering firm to figure out the worst possible place for the neighbors mailbox, I would bet its already there.

My old Roo, I had it figured out. Pull up to this point, run the trailer tire over this crack, etc and I could grease it in on one pull. I'm not there yet with the 8329. The dread really builds on road that's the last two miles to the house.

Not a lot of biting insects above 7,000'. Some places have mosquitoes, but not many, and it's highly dependent on water (which we don't have a lot of ... which is a different sort of problem). CO is great for camping without bugs. It's the best camping area I've ever lived in (WA, OR, VA, TN).

We have ticks, but I've never seen one in 14 years ... other than on deer and elk.

Worst part is tear-down. It used to be cranking the roof up and down and managing the bunk ends.

I have several worst parts of camping.

1. Filling my F350 fuel tank with diesel OUCH!
2. Sanitizing the water system and filling the fresh water tank-hate doing this
3. Intense moments of fellowship with the wife who is "helping' me backup into our parking slot at RV storage.
4. 1 minute showers to conserve water-I don't mind but the DW hates it.
5. RV Queen Size bed doesn't fit our 3 boxers as well as our California King at home and I often end upon the fold out.
6. China bomb tires blowing (hasn't happened since I switched to L/T tires.
7. Water pump failure when boondocking. Guess who carries a spare pump? Yep, me!
8. MICE in camper should be #1.
9. Camping without my wife.
10. Camping without my dogs

I get anxious when my DH backs it up in the campground or at home, but the worse thing is to have a flat tire or mechanical/function malfunction when traveling on the road, especially after dark. Also, I had the flu when we were camping with my BIL and his wife after Christmas. I was stuck in the trailer sick as a dog and unable to participate with the events on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

As a former president said "I feel your pain".

My wife passed away in 2016 so I now merely rely on my Backup/Observation camera to get my TT into it's parking spot. I have to back through a 12" camouflaged gate into my back yard (HOA rules of course). I merely pull into my neighbors driveway across the street and then back up my temporary curb ramps. When I think of it, the camera makes it easier than when I had "help". To help get things lined up I just lay a few pieces of 2X4 along the path and then follow them in the camera as I back. Nailed it on the first try last Thursday nite when I got back from a month on the road.

As for the mailbox? If it's on a post, just ask your neighbor if you can remove it and then reinstal in a "socket". If it's on a 4X4, a piece of square tubing set in the ground with a sack of concrete will allow you to pull the mailbox and replace once you've moved your trailer into it's "dock". Same if it's on a round pipe, just use a piece of round tubing that the pipe will slip into. If your neighbor is a nice neighbor he'll even pitch in and help you dig.

At my house that I just sold I also had the micro-incision back-in, and the mail boxes were of course in my yard and in my way.

My neighbor had a spot where he had dug up a bush and never did anything with that hole.

I asked him that if I paid for everything, could I move our mail boxes to that spot.

He said yes...so I did!

Good suggestions, but the mailbox kinda keeps me honest. That is to say... I don't want to run it down the side of my truck, so I am very conscious of where my nose is at all times. If it was moved, I might be less than attentive in how I place the front end, and I could see myself easily (and accidentally) running a tire through the neighbors yard. She's a cool young twentysomething girl and would say "no problem" in an instant, but I'm not gonna be 'that guy'. The guy she bought the house from was the a-hole that got all uppity with me because someone else ran through his yard to get around me as I was trying to dock the camper.

I won't even pull in her driveway, despite the fact that she told me its ok a couple times, and it would make my entry shot much easier. My truck dribbles a bit of oil (OK... Leaks like the Exxon Valdez) and I'm not gonna spot oil all over her driveway.

Retired and Loving It

Every one of these complaints, all happening in one terrible day, is still better than going to work.

Having just gotten home of 7 days with BUGS I am inclined that direction --- even with a thermacell on during the light of day & bug soother & repell 100.... dang. Top that with the evil yellow fly that hunts by sight & you don't know it until they bite...don't miss on the first hit cause they resurrect from a passing blow to hunt you down again & again.... I have a doctor appt in 2 days & I know he is going to try to 'diagnose' the rash that is a million no see um bites ....
