There are people like this.

So...a week ago Thursday, my son, who's been looking for a toy hauler all year, finds a 2016 Puma...(pre-FR) 38' everything he's been looking for. Private owner, 2hrs from his home. Pics look good, and he's set. Calls owner arranges to come up and owner asks if he can be there by 6pm. He agreed and heads out, stops at bank for money and drives up. Gets in about 5:30pm, heading down main street...(small town) and see's a Puma, just like the pic, pass going the other way. He already knows how this is going to end and proceeds to house. Owner says...guy showed up, wrote a check and drove away with trailer for same price as son offered.
Here's the Best Part !
He gets a call from owner Friday that the trailer is available, as the buyer's check bounced at the bank and they had to get authorities to recover trailer. Owner states that it has some damage on it, but is still available for the same price. My son hung up on him.

Honestly...when we sold our older trailer in April, two gals made an offer and asked me to hold it for 3 days while they got the money. I agreed and asked for $50 to hold. I get two more offers at my original asking price, but told the buyers I was holding an offer and I would contact if the sale fell through. I would've pocketed $1000.00 more dollars, but I made a promise.

That works as long as the check doesn't bounce. I only take cash or a cashiers check and meet them at my bank to confirm the check is good, then I will hand over the pink and the unit.

Not if a commitment has been made to a certain person at a certain time, as was the case here.

He did the right thing.
This is not the world we grew up in, a handshake (a man's word) used to seal the deal - but nowadays .........

When I sell something and the buyer asks "Can I write a check? I Promise it's good"? I say "no, I'm not your bank. IF it's good, go cash it and bring me the cash. Don't make ME go to YOUR bank for cash".

99% of those never show up. Checks are worthless in private sales IMHO.

You can cancel a cashiers check you have written, you can't cancel a bank draft which is what you really want, it is supported by cash and cannot be canceled.

Checks are good for small, repeated transactions, where the recipient is willing to risk small losses in order to build good will for future business, not for single, large transactions.

Bringing the check and the person who wrote it to the bank it was drawn on will save you a ton of problems. Once you have a counter check (or cash) from the bank to you, you can head to the title place and complete the sale.

I never do personal sales after banking hours for that reason.

My wife was a banker for decades. She said the a cashiers check at her bank could be canceled only if the customer certified in writing that the check was lost or stolen.

True, which is why I never make such a commitment. There been too many people burned the other way too. "Hey I want your camper, I'll be there on Saturday with cash, hold it for me" and then either they never show up, or they come and change their minds.

Yeah, I've lost out on good deals too because someone sold something out from under me, and it sucks, but I can't be mad at them. Till money changes hands, you haven't bought anything. But I gotta admit, it's some serious chutzpah to call your son after the first deal busted. If I was him, I would have gotten the trailer at a SERIOUS discount when the guy called back.

Yeah, but cashiers check are just as easy to forge as the rest. I'll take one, but ONLY when we complete the deal at the local sheriffs office where all ID's are checked and recorded (they do that service for free). Usually, if they are being straight-up, that wont bother them a bit. I've had 2 guys so far balk at doing that. I'm convinced they were gonna try to scam me.

We bought our first tt used from a private owner. He was literally scared to take $9000 cash (I gave him $1000 down). He made us meet in his bank so he could deposit it immediately. I think it made him nervous when I gave him the $1000 down.
