Thermostat Not Working Properly

I have a 2017 Cherokee 274VFK Limited with a digital thermostat and have the A/C running when its been hot outside (80+). I set the thermostat at 74 degrees and it feels like an ice box in the camper. Right now, it is set at 80 degrees and its comfortable. I'm going to place a household thermometer in the unit later and see what the ambient air temp is. But has anyone else noticed this? And if so, what have you done?

I believe that you will find that most RV thermostats are not very accurate. Don't worry too much about the "number" shown on the electronic readout. My recommendation is find a setting that's comfortable and simply adjust it up or down as needed.

X2! I found ours is a minimum 2 degrees off. Temp is higher then the thermostat reads.

If it's a Dometic digital thermostat you can try initializing it and see if that helps, but don't expect too much.

Mine varies wildly as well. I bought a cheap thermometer to use in the camper and just get the temp comfortable in the camper and do not worry about the number that is displayed on the thermostat. The funny thing is it seems to keep the temperature pretty consistent when using the furnace.

One thing I have seen in the past is a large hole cut in the wall behind the thermostat. The inner wall can have a draw of air that is hot, affecting the thermostat, from the back side, thus making the stat think it's warmer than it really is. You might check to see if you might stuff some insulation in the wall behind the stat. Good luck.

If the thermostat is located on the frig cabinet wall, then it will never be correct. The wall is not insulated and the backside is exposed to whatever temp the frig backside sees. Summer, with heater running, the stat will read higher than coach temp. Winter, with frig heater off and cold outside air flowing thru the vents, opposite will happen. 3/4" rigid foam glued to the backside of the 1/8" paneling made a big difference.

Even on other walls, with floor holes for wiring and plumbing, there could be significant air leaks affecting the stay.

I have a Dometic digital thermostat in my RV and I think it is about 5 degrees off best I can tell....

I installed a digital home style thermostat in my trailer just for the heating circuit. It is much more accurate than the spring type.


Along the lines of what others have posted, in my condo, I moved my thermostat to another location in the living room. The thermostat was about a foot away from the big screen TV so one day I took my laser heat thermometer and found that while the rest of the room was in the 70's, the space next to the TV was 90 degrees!
