I'd suspect tires can handle over inflation much better than under and the results of under inflation can be catastrophic. So therefore, to put my 2 cent in on the original question, I'd set my tire pressure after the 20 degree drop in temp. in the morning. I agree, this will drive you crazy trying to figure out what the right pressure is at times.
Makes sense to me. Just worry about disturbing others with compresser early in morning. So overinflated them a little the afternoon before. And they were good the next morning.

Yea, I've done that also. Honestly, I don't think it's so critical that 1 or 2 psi would put us in dire straits.
