Angry Tires do not match 5th wheel weight

Why would Forest River sell my Salem 29RKSS with tires that will not hold the weight of the 5th? If I add the UVW of 7869 and the CCC of 3709, this totals 11,578 pounds or 2894 per tire. You will not find this in a 15 inch tire. This is very frustrating.

Factory installed are Bias Ply 225x75xD15 tires and they will not properly carry the load of my 2013 Salem 5th wheel.

Are others having this same issue?

They deduct the load that the truck would carry from the load on the wheels. 10 to 20% typically.

The tires don't carry the full weight. You have to subtract the pin weight from your gross.

Hello,

They normally put radial tires on from the factory, did you order or have bias ply tires put on the trailer? But you never know what they might have in stock.

I found this tire in bias ply
Std. Equiv. H78 x 15
Load Range: D (8-ply)
Max. Capacity: 2540 lbs. each
Overall Diameter: 28.7"
Maximum PSI: 65 lbs.

There is 1500 lbs on the pin unloaded probably closer to 2,000 fully loaded.

So taking your weight off the total you have 9,500 left.or 2375 per tire. The sample tire is 2540 lbs

So you have enough fully loaded capacity.

A 5th wheel trailer has significant weight supported by the front jacks, or by the pin and hitch in your tow vehicle. You have to consider that in evaluating weights.

First off the tires it comes with are generally considered "delivery and display" tires. Read all the posts on here about blow-outs and you should see that the first thing to do when you buy a new trailer is get some decent tires. Give the junk that it comes with away because they are not easy to sell. This way you can put whatever you like on it. About the only real choice you have is Maxxis. All the other junk is made in China including the poorly rated Goodyear Marathon..

Cheap tires

None of the Chinese trailer tires will carry the advertised weight very long.
And they are almost all Chinese.

Try a load range higher than what comes on the trailer. I had all 4 tires go on my six month old Prime Time Spartan. Prime time passed the buck to the tire manufacturer. The weight on the tires was 500 lbs less than what they were rated for. I weighed the trailer and I know exactly how much weight was on the tires when they blew. Now I have $2k damage on my new trailer.

well i got over 10.000k's on a set of goodyear marathons and no problems yet.

what i think happens is some people don't bother to inspect and keep them aired up and they over heat.

I agree, yes there are failures. That is true every where. But we live in a world where they need tpms because people will not even check their oil or air pressure otherwise.. I also feel it is the users abuse of the tires 95% of the time.

Upgrade your tires.

It took me a lot of looking to find 14" tires that had a speed rating of 81 mph,and load range D, but I found them at eTrailer.com

Newer trailer tires are coming out with the higher speed rating, and upgrading to a higher load rating eliminates most of the problems. I've upgraded tires on 4 trailers and one SUV, and it has eliminated blowouts. You can still run over a nail, but that doesn't really happen very often.

Keep looking, and ask the seller what the Speed rating is. Eventually you will find it. Load Range E 15 inch tires are rated for 2830 lbs @80 psi.

The two worst things for tires are low air pressure and UV Rays. Protect your RV from the sun when it's in storage and run the recommended sidewall pressure when towing. Eventually you will find a tire pressure monitor will more than pay for itself.

Weight, under inflation and UV will hurt the tires but most of them blow because of such poor construction. There are several documented reports on various RV websites of these cheap Chinese tires blowing out while mounted on the trailer as spares. How do you explain that other than poor construction? Do yourself a favor and get rid of them. It's just a matter of time....

Maybe, but they have a great track record and don't blow up while hanging on the back bumper...

As has been said, the hitch carries at least 1500 dry! More when loaded. So if you subtract say 1500lbs for the hitch you should show just enough for the tires. However as we know, manuf like to save money and a tire just shy of being over weight is considered OK by the manuf. I would step up to a Carlisle RH HD tire. They are new and have a very good reputation for the last 7 years. I have been running the Carlisle Radial Trail RH tire in a load range E and have been very happy. Many long trips in hot temps!

Have to agree that the tires that come on TT or 5th's are probably cheap junk for the most part. Also have to agree that some people don't pay enough attention to tires. I decided to replace my original tires on my TT after 1 year which I did. I found these and Discount Tire matched the price. Maxxis tires get great reviews but I don't believe they are necessarily superior to these Carlisle's. Just made a trip in blistering FL heat cruising at 70 mph (normally don't exceed 65 but had to make up some time) with no problem.

Maxxis tires, 16 inch, rated E were what came on my 2015 Wildcat 327 ck. They are ST
tires and it is my understanding that all ST tires are made overseas? I am happy with these tires.

What 14" tire has a D rating? I love to put Maxxis on my TT but they only make C. Does this tire have a good history?

I found it and couldn't believe my eyes. Don't know about them, but anything is worth a try.

There was a new Carlisle Radial Trail HD in the ST 205 75R14 LR D that supposedly just came out. Haven't seen any reviews however...

Edited - Sorry, I just looked at discount tire's website and it's no longer listed.

Carlisle's website lists that tire in a D rating but it doesn't appear to be available...
