If there is one system on the RV that I don’t want to have an issue with it is the black tank. I use toilet paper that is labeled for RV’s. I don’t care if RV toilet paper is overpriced or even if it’s just a con job, that’s what I’m going to use. We currently use Scott for RV and Boats TP because we didn’t like the TP from Camco or Thetford.
I have a clear elbow on the drain so I can see what’s coming out of the black tank. Because of this clear elbow I also don’t believe in the Geo method and instead use chemicals in my black tank. I also have a favorite chemical that I use which is also based on what I see coming out of the black tank.
Just my 2 cents.

What many folks seem to forget... your black holding tank is just that... it is a HOLDING tank. It is NOT a septic tank.
The majority of the folks who camp, start out with an empty tank, use it a few days or a week and then empty when leaving. There is no sloshing and no time for chemicals to break down waste. For this scenario, the only rule to remember is use LOTS and LOTS of water.
For those who park at a seasonal site or travel full time and choose not to empty and flush their tanks before leaving one campground to go to another, the result is slightly different as the system then has an opportunity to start to begin to break up the waste (through sloshing and travel) but even then, most will dump and flush before the same digestive effects of what happens in a septic tank begins to take place.
For those who have a toilet in your rig and don't use it... that is your choice.
We use ours because it is... well... ours!
|
Good point I for one keep 5 gallons of water in mine after I clean it and flush the system after every camping trip. When I Get to the campground I drop a packet in so I don't have clogs even if it is for a short weekend trip.
Water is the key but if you can use a chemical too helps break stuff down and keeps smells at bay, has not failed me in the last 3 years I have used an RV, no smells, no clogs and my meters seem read correct all the time but I never take a chance, that can lead to a disaster.

A-YUP!
Best home brew black/gray tank chemicals are:
Equal Part of:
Superclean (get it at Amazon)
Calgon Liquid
PineSol
Water
I will put 6-8OZ in the black tank every dump (along with 2 gallons of water) and 4OZ in the gray tank after each dump (no additional water added)

Wow! 87 posts on toilet paper. I guess some subjects are more important than others.
Oh, we use the Scotts RV stuff from Wal Mart.

I just wanted to see if I could use stuff from the supermarkets in the RV bc I can only find 6 packs of RV TP. I figured there would be just a few answers, but apparently this is a crappy subject everyone wanted to talk about....lol

We are crappie happy, but we use fishing poles. DW got us matching shirts with, "I'm having a crappie day". It has the fish picture rather than a toilet roll.
