Tornado Warning
Bail out and run through the rain to the tornado shelter or stay in the camper and wait it out?
Tough choice.
Here is a camper that was picked up and dropped on a house.

Impressive picture. The choice is easy, run for it. The problem is, most times where we camp there isn't much besides the bathroom to run to.

The bathrooms in the state parks we frequent will work just fine, as they are all built like a brick sh...well, you know.

That picture was taken not to far from where I live... I think its always the smartest choice to get to shelter. If not find a low lying area. Can easily pick up a camper... as shown above

BAIL!
You can always dry off later. You can't always live thru a tornado.

We haven't had a touchdown since something like '73, but we did have a funnel cloud yesterday:
Tornado watchers spot funnel cloud over Maidstone | Windsor Star
Considering they say the biggest threat in a tornado is flying debris, running for it may not always be the safest bet. Get to cover quickly yes, but gotta be safe to do so.

At the Goshen Rally last year the sirens when off and it was very interesting who showed up at the bathhouse shelter and the "cavalier" attitude of some folks strolling over to see what was going on.
DW and I felt a bit silly running over there with out hand held weather radio blaring out warnings.
The year prior in Kansas, (prior to the hand held) a twister touched down only 3 miles from our campground. No one came to knock on our door so we slept through it. Found out the next day as we packed to leave.
In Georgia, at the Dobbins ARB, we camped at their FAMCAMP (again prior to hand held) and the Security Police knocked on our door and told us to evacuate to the Billeting office. Also told us the dog was not welcome there. We rode out the storm in the truck in the BX parking lot with the dog in our lap.
I will never be without our hand held weather radio again.

If there is a next time, park as close (a foot or two away would be great) to the building as possible & hope for the best. If there is a lot of debris which will fly, shopping carts etc. try another side of the building. Or maybe another building.

I kept the motor running till the storm passed. I wanted to be able to run in any direction. It was not the best option but we would not have left Bella to fend for herself in the camper.

Would have told them if the dog isn't welcome then I'm not either and would packed up as quick as I could and moved on in a safe direction. When I reached home would have passed this on to as many as I could and told the story on their review site. Hate places that tell me the dog isn't welcome yet they let in a lot of dirty nasty people. The dog is part of the family.

Tough to do at 3 AM with the sirens blowing.
The shelter was not all that much better than the BX parking lot.
Lots of windows.

Tough call and my answer would depend on the situation.
Early enough warning, it's light out and I can see, I'm running for it.
The noise wakes me up? That's the tough choice. If it's on top of me I'm staying put. I'll fly in the camper just as well as running but at least I'm somewhat safe from debris. If I perceive I have time and won't get hung out on the way, then I'll take off running.

The Red Cross has apps for your smartphone that will provide storm warning based on your location. Tornado, hurricane, wildfire, earthquake.

Does it push or does the app have to be open?

The National Weather service is applying a push notifications warning thru out the us.
Even if your phone is on silent you'll get that loud weather service tone and a text msg stating the warning.
No app.
I got one the other night at 4 am brought me straight out of bed for a flash flood warning!

Interesting, but from reading through the material it sounds like it's carrier specific. Doesn't help us who come from the north to visit ya'll in the south since Canadian carriers wouldn't be on the list.
If they didn't rely on the carrier and instead sent a general broadcast to any device connected to that tower they'd be able to reach more people.

I live in a northeast suburb of Indy, that picture has been on the news a lot. Supposedly the family had the trailer packed and were going to leave the next day.
