Question Tow / Haul on Motor Home

Good afternoon !!!!!
We have a motor home with the Ford V10. I've tried the tow/haul button several times, but I never see where it changes the rpm's or even change the shifting pattern. It will make a difference when you slow down, almost gives it a jake/brake effect. Am I missing something???
Thanks !!!!

Usualy the tow haul will hold the shifts longer. It does on my Ram anyway. It will help on down hill engine breaking too.Between it and mt exhaust brake on the Cummins,I hardly ever hit the breaks on a down mountain run.

You should be able to see some RPM change when activated. Is yours a five or six speed? Not being a hill or mountain person living here in Florida, I did use it a few months back in the WV, Va, NC mountains, and it worked great on shifting going up, and keeping us under control / geared down, while descending!

Over drive button

Can you switch it on or off while your driving.

Yep, but in hilly/mountain country just leave it on.

I run with tow/haul and EB on full even when not towing.

Tow/haul can be used for the TV alone or while towing. When I switch to tow/haul, it is difficult to tell the difference. Yes you can turn tow/haul on and off at any time. Only in tow/haul will you have the downhill braking feature. On the first adequate step on the brake pedal, it will downshift one gear. Step on the brakes again and it will downshift another gear. Lightly stepping on the gas pedal allows it to upshift.

On my V10 tow/haul will down shift one gear when you tap the brake, thus slowing the Ford and a noticeable RPM increase

I definitely use the Tow /Haul on downhill grades ,rarely otherwise. E450 Sunseeker V10 does fine normal driving but downhills in T/H saves your brakes

Actually saves your brakes all the time if you use it all the time. My brake pads are OEM going on 75K, recently checked when tires were replaced and truck was aligned. Shop estimates another 20-25K.

Hundred thou on a set of brakes is pretty impressive, and I have to give credit to T/H and EB.

Id have it on all the time . Its a motor home so its always hauling they're heavy . Aside from braking assistance the more aggressive shift pattern it will lock the torque converter sooner and longer to keep from generating so much transmission heat . HEAT KILLS TRANSMISSIONS

We are 7800 miles on an 11,000 mile trip through thr Rockies, Canadian Rockies, Alaska and most of the mountain ranges up here. MANY, MANY long 6,7, 8, 9, 10% Grades up and down. Tow haul keeps the transmission from so frequently "hunting" the correct gear. The V10 is ideal for this with the tow haul on and kudos to Ford for engineering such an effective tool. Coming up or down these grades we only need to tap the brakes once or twice to downshift, then rarely have we had to touch the brakes afterward. We always drive with it even on the flat land.

hardly notice the rpm change when accelerating with the 6 speed, V10 MH. I did notice it a lot with the old 4 speed tv pulling.
Love the tow haul in the Ford 6 speed for city and for hills.

I drive my 2011 Georgetown with tow/haul on all the time. For mountain driving, I rarely use the brakes on downhills, even when pulling a toad. The trick to managing speed with it on downhills is to get into the lower gear at the top of the hill, before you've gained too much speed for the transmission to downshift.

I had to replace my brakes this year, after driving over 90k miles!

While I don't have a V10, own an F150. The tow haul mode is a blessing in at least a couple ways. First of course as you mentioned it acts as a brake going down hills while pulling our TT. More importantly for me is the transmission doesn't shift as easily between gears. Instead when accelerating it holds the gear for another approximately 500 rpm before shifting to the next higher gear. It typically does less shifting up and down to maintain speed this way. Usually, it also won't shift into 6th gear unless you are in flat road.
For me pulling a fairly large TT it just means less throttle management in hilly terrain as well as when taking off from traffic lights getting up to speed.

Thank you all for your responses.

I've been playing around with the tow/haul button and it definitely helps when reducing speed. Other than that I don't see any rpm changes.

When I had the fifth wheel and the Ford F350 Power Stroke, I used the tow haul all the time with great success. In the motor home I don't see much change with it other than during the time I'm reducing speed or maintaining speed on a hill.
