I understand the OP's concern. There is a sign going north on I-29 just over the border into South Dakota from Iowa at the weigh station that says something about "Commercial vehicles and trucks over 8000lbs including RV's must stop" followed shortly thereafter with a flashing sign (which seems to be directed at your vehicle) that says "vehicle must pull over" (or something like that).
All other signs (at different weigh stations in the state) say "RV's Excluded" up to this point. I think the sign is directed at commercial vehicles towing RV's but that didn't stop my 17 and 13 yr old a hissy fit when I didn't stop and my wife asking 20,000 questions about if I thought it was ok to blow through that weigh station.
I did do some asking around in the state and nobody seemed to have a straight answer outside of "it's not a bad idea" and "they'll likely just waive you through". I really feel that it's likely directed at commercial haulers towing RV's as the speed limits are high in the state and I could see where they may be concerned about it. We used to live there and I once saw a commercial hauler on the side of the road with his 1-ton Dually on it's side and nothing but a pile of splinters behind it (he'd hit a bridge support).
I think it would be good to have a definitive answer on SoDak as it does seem really vague.
