Travel through Alligator Alley

My wife and I have a trip planned to the Florida Keys and will be traveling down Alligator Alley. We will want to boondock half way as we are leaving Tampa after work and won't make it that night. Does anyone have any advise for good rest areas or places to stop down Alligator Alley?

Hey Phil,
There are two rest areas on the alley, one in Collier and one in Broward. Either would be fine, but I'd suggest the Broward one because the fire station is there. Another option is Markham park at the eastern end of the alley. It has a nice campground with full hookups.

A couple of years a go, we too US 41 / 90 from Homestead too 29 to 75. It was a nice drive from key west and a nice road through the everglades. There are a lot of pull offs but I don't remember any campgrounds on US 41. There is a large truckstop at the intersection of US 41 and 29. Hope this helps. You are going to love key west.

You have got to eat lunch at the El Seboney restraunt. Good eats. Have fun.

Well it depends on what halfway means to you. There is a very cool campground just inside the Florida peninsula. It's called Florida caverns State Park. It's a small State Park however they actually have tours real taverns within the park grounds. If thats too far of a drive from John Pennekamp. There is a hotel that has 4 RV spots in Cedar Key Florida. The RV spots are right on the water, and Cedar Key is a neat small village on the Gulf of Mexico. I hope that helps enjoy the trip

To be honest, I'd be surprised if you can find overnight parking that is allowed in much of Florida at rest areas or Walmarts or the like. Since it's such a touristy area, I think they crack down on that pretty hard.

Of course, this is all hearsay and guessing.

My guess is you're going to need to find a cheap campground to stop at.
