Travel to mexico

I am from the Willis/Houston TX area and contemplating to go to Puerto Vallarta via Brownville and Alaska in 2019 or 2020, once each year. I am a very detail planner guy, therefore I normally plan our trip especially Mexico and Alaska way ahead of time to ensure I know everything necessary before I would loading up and go.

I saw some videos on youtube from the people who went through Nogales, AZ. The road looks good and looks like they have some good time caravan with others.

Have anyone went to Mexico through Texas alone (single RV) if you could share your experiences as far as the road condition, fuel availability (gas), stop along the way. The distance is around 1,200 to 1,400 miles which could take 3 to 4 days. How is the stop along the way overnight like the truck stop, or rest area or campground?

I know that we have to register our RV and tow vehicle for a fee, only 2 of us travel, no pet so no paperwork is needed when returning to the US, I know that we need to have the Mexican RV and tow vehicle insurance which cost roughly around $700 to $1,000 for 6 months, the high cost of tolls road. Need to bring Mexican Peso, since not many places accept credit cards.

If you travel to Mexico via different town such as San Diego or Nogales, etc. You are welcome to share your experiences as well.

Any additional information you could share including but not limited to any point of interests other than Puerto Vallarta, any duration, any issues that one need to be considered when crossing the border both way, any security and safety issue, etc. are welcome.

My wife and I are both photographers (www.letranphotography.com and https://500px.com/tamdle55), we love nature and people photography, any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in the group traveling, I am open to that as well.

Have a wonderful day.

Sorry I had to give you the advisory. Didn't mean to rain on your parade.

There is no way I would walk into Mexico much less take my Truck and 5er into Mexico. I would probably have to walk out if I still was able after losing everything. Just saying IMHO

No, thank you! I forgot about checking with the state department travel advisory website.

With the RV, not only us, but many would like to travel the world with it, but since we cannot travel across the "big pond", we could only drive in North America and South America only.

That said, with so much crime in many tourist areas in Mexico per the state department advisory site, we just have to settle with US, Alaska, and Canada.

Thanks again.

I have friends who have done it. They did choose to buy a smaller trailer instead of their 40’ fifth wheel so that they didn’t look “flashy”. And, I assume so they could fit into more places.

I have friends there now - @crazyfamilyadventure on Instagram and other social media now. They are also doing it in a smaller trailer but their reason was that their motorhome was unreliable.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

RV caravans leaving all the time from Nogales/Green Valley/Tucson to cross at Nogales. Mainly all go to Rocky Point. I might think of going with caravan, but would never venture into Mexico alone. We live 4O miles from the border and the funny thing about the folks you see crossing; none of them are US border locals There is nothing in Mexico I need that bad.

I’ve been to Mexico on a mission trip. There is no way I would go by myself. We had locals looking out for us 100% of the time and it was still a little scary.

A few years ago when NASCAR went to Mexico City they had a Military Escort at all times while they were in Mexico.

In spite of the advisories, the truth is thousands of Canadian and American Rvers spend the winter in Mexico without issue. Mexico is a big country with great places to visit and bad areas to avoid. Be sure to inform yourself before you go. Here is a website with a lot of good info about RVing in Mexico.

It's true, lots of folks go down to Mexico every year. It's cheap, and there are some gorgeous sights. My family used to go there frequently, 20-30 years ago. Things have changed. When things go bad down there, they go very bad very quickly, and you have absolutely no recourse. I know from personal experience. So, like everything, it's a gamble. The last time Liz and I were down there was about 10 years ago and we were uncomfortable enough that we decided to never return.

I live in the Brownsville area and have not heard of any RV caravans from this area. Right now it is not advisable to travel across the Northern states in Mexico. The merchants here at Christmas because because are not coming up from Mexico to go shopping. If you have a big fancy truck, that is a trouble magnet. Especially if it is a quad cab. Walking across the border to visit a border town is not bad. Just keep your eyes and ears open for any trouble, just keep calm and keep moving (take cover if bullet are flying) without staring and reacting.

Found a new interesting article regard to traveling to Mexico recently being reported on CNBC over the weekend.

Note that many cities are very good, however, that was for the traveler who would want to fly there. For those of us who "drive there in our RV", we need to know about the states and the cities along the way between our beginning point and the destination, which may not be as safe as we thought it would be.

Here is the link to the article, hope that you would enjoy it.

Tam have you ever heard of "Travel with Kevin and Ruth"?

They are guiding a caravan of 16 (I think) RV's of all sizes through Mexico. The trip is for several months. They have been to Mexico several times before by themselves, but they are taking a group this time. They have some safety concerns, but nothing to prevent them from going.

Very interesting reading.

Anyone who thinks Mexico really 'isn't that bad" is out of touch with reality.

I hate to be posting dueling warnings but Mexico is safe to travel in but as in any country there are some places you do not want to go. Please understand that most countries issue travel warnings about the U.S. due to our gun violence.
