Traveling through tunnels

Can you safely travel through tunnels with the propane fridge on?
Headed to Myrtle Beach this next week and was looking for advice. Thanks in advance.

Yes you can unless prohibited by law.

Fear factor in this event is a fire caused by the propane's flame in case there is a wreck.

This is usually for longer tunnels and those are posted, I do not know if the cops or port authority check.

I recently traveled to Hickory NC and drove through the tunnels on I40 near Tennessee and NC borders and I did not see any signs posted that would prohibit propane use. The only sign I recall seeing is based on explosives transport must use alternate route. I have never traveled with propane on, but do not see any issues. Also, check before traveling and ensure the tunnels are open. I thought they were closing for maintenance...BTW if I am not referencing the tunnels you were planning to travel past, please disregard...Sorry...

Not sure where you coming from but know tunnels around the Baltimore area say no no. I would Google and check before heading out. If they don't they will normally provide an alternate route.

We had the same concerns for traveling to myrtle from New York. All the signs say no propane allowed. on our trip from Florida I skirted the tunnels and followed the route for a bridge instead. I have since learned and read that you may travel through the tunnels with propane, no more than 2 30 pound tanks provided they are off. Turn them off before you go and on back on after and you should be fine.
On a side note a friend of ours was stopped with his class c for that very reason and the officer only wanted to check that tanks are off.

Been fined $250.00 in Baltimore for driving a single 20 pound propane tank PUP through the harbor tunnel 20 years ago. THAT was an expensive learning experience. No idea what the fine is now. "Surely they don't mean US" I said to the DW.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel has Propane Rules as well.

MUST be OFF to get past the toll booth (they will random check and if you look shocked when they ask) and no more than 2 tanks. http://www.cbbt.com/gas.html

There are others as well. But those two are for sure.

On my way to Pennsylvania from Long Island, NY my GPS sent me to the midtown tunnel. Right before the tunnel 2 NYPD officers standing in the road stopped me and traffic, told my I can't bring propane (I believe he said compressed gas, not sure) in the tunnel. He sent me on a one way narrow road cars on both sides, barely enough room for the 5er. Then I find myself on 2nd Ave in Manhattan pulling a 34' 5th wheel. I saw the sign heading back to Long Island and I headed straight home. Totally my fault, but very frustrating.

Several tunnels in Virginia require that you stop for inspection to make sure your gas bottles are off......

One tunnel on I77 (Virginia - West Virginia line area) was closed for several months a few years back for tile repairs after a motorhome burned up in it. No one was injured. The motor home was a total loss. Big $$$$ repair cost to the tunnel......
