Travelling oo Bar Harbor, NB and NS from western NY

Planning a trip in a week or two from western NY to Bar Harbor and Nova Scotia. Seems that if I stick to the interstates there is only one way. Wondering if anyone has done the coastal route (Route 1?) or ventured into central Maine. I am looking for a way back to western NY without re-tracing my steps.

Somebody must have some good ideas. Most mapping sites keep me on 95 and such.

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe try US 2 from Montpelier VT to Bangor ME? Goes right by Mt. Washington, but it's a 2 lane with lots of small towns - the exact opposite of an Interstate. There are 3 ferries across Lake Champlain to NY.

Can't help you Scott, but I'm also from WNY and would be interested in which routes you end up using as I want to get out that way next year.

I was on US 1 from BH down to Portland last summer. Honestly the drive was not as scenic as I expected it would be. Seems like it took forever to get to Portland and not much in the way of fuel stops. Not sure what you are driving/pulling, but you might could find a few lobster pounds to choose from. I was in a car and not in "RV mode" since I knew I would probably never have an RV up there (from NC); and didn't pay attention to RV related issues like parking etc. I think camping at Arcadia NP would be awesome, but not sure if they have RV sites or not. I think there is a nice looking KOA on the water near BH though...
