That's why you don't see Metzger's milk any more....

Definitely in the back of the pickup. Also keep tanks upright. A tank sitting upright that sits in the sunshine will vent a little gas when overheated. A tank laying on its side will vent liquid propane which expands 270 times. That quickly creates a large flammable cloud. People traveling with a propane tank laying on its side in a car trunk have had their windows blown out and roof raised just from the expanding gas.

And if you are having a hard time getting your hands on old used milk crates, cause all the forum readers got them before you, , you can always buy new ones at Home Depot for $5 each...as well as many other stores I am sure.

I have to agree with the milk crate but doesn't matter where you put it back of truck or trailer just would take it out of both upon arrival and while traveling i would secure the tank wit a strap so if you stop quick it can't move. Also make sure its open to the air just in case id does leak. You don't want the fumes in your truck also vent your trailer if you put it in there. It shouldn't be carried in an enclosed area.

As far as I know it is illegal to travel with propane in the basement or cupboard of your 5th wheel or tt, the reason is if there is a fire, the fire department would remove or water down the two 30 pound tanks, but since they do not know about the tank in the basement, it could be deadly. This would also apply in case of an accident.

I still have milk crates with my albums from 1966..the diaries are long gone and the changed the size in 1978 so albums don't any longer . The other option is a rental company, they have crates for dish rental the fit propane tanks well.

Tanks are in 2 separate compartments in 5th wheels and completely inside motor homes in a locked compartment.

Not fully enclosed spaces. Putting it in the basement is a fully enclosed space and runs risks because the propane has no where to go but to lay on the compartment floor until you turn the vacuum on and we'll read about it in the paper.
Better safe than sorry, I'd put a spare tank in the bed or on a rack behind the coach.

To my knowledge and I have searched extensively, the are no laws governing transportation or 'personal' propane tanks.
Common sense however should prevail

I carry a 20 pounder in a milk crate in the front storage next to where one 30 pound tank is I use a rubber bungee cord to hold it next to the wall.
When set up the tank is outside, when moving the door to the storage is unlocked.

I checked with the fire department about a year ago on this very matter. He stated there are no laws governing it. That's the deal in Texas. Law might be different in Canada, how about checking with your local fire chief in Canada and letting the rest of us know. That way when we travel there we don't get in trouble.

On my Flagstaff 5er, the open area the tanks are in vents down into the belly just like the basement does. Not worth arguing about either way. Motor homes have the propane tanks in a closed compartment and NO rv is sealed adequately enough to keep the fumes in only one area.

In Canada they put propane tanks in the trunks of Crown Victoria's and haul 4 people for money in Taxi Cabs. Now the fleet is rusting away they are going to Toyota Camary's with 4 people and gas engines.

I know there was a retired fire fighter, who discussed fire extinguishers on this sight, it would be interesting to hear what he has to say on the subject. I hope he will reply.

I know who you are speaking of,but don't remember his handle. He's a fire department official in New York State and always has good information.

I don't know about all motorhomes, but the propane tank on our Class C Sunseeker is mounted on the chassis frame with nothing underneath it. Any vapor would sink to the ground. It is behind a compartment door that is marked "PROPANE". The door has a thumb latch but no lock so firemen can find it and shut off the gas, of course, if they think it is safe enough to get that close.

I believe somewhere it's written that you cannot transport propane cylinders or gas jugs on the back of your camper in case you're rear ended.
I do know someone who was pulled over because he had a propane tank mounted on the back of his truck camper. Wasn't fined or anything... Just educated he had to move it.

Big difference between the back bumper and inside the basement. I wouldn't think of putting it on the back bumper or anywhere on the outside except on the tongue of a tt in the proper holder. Same way for a battery.
