Travelling with generator

I recently purchased a used Honda EU3000 generator which I'm extremely happy with....except lifting it! I don't know that I'd be able to lift it in and out of the back of my F-150 even with my wife's help as the truck tailgate is tall being a 4x4 on 18" rims.

I'm looking for recommendations/ideas for the best ways to travel with the generator that would be easier than trying to muscle it up into and out of the truck.

Thanks!

Those are very nice and very quiet. Any reason you don't want to just run it out of the back of the truck?

Something like this would be best. HF or Northern tool have options like this. For what your lifting you could also build something. Don't need it to lift 1000lbs just 200ish.

Go to Harbor Freight and get a 2 wheel cart of your choosing,

next get a set of atv ramps also of your choosing (I don't go really cheap on these but don't buy the most expensive either), I like the bi or tri fold

ratchet strap the Honda to the dolly, set the ramps and wheel it into your truck bed.

Works great

The edge of the folded down tailgate on our truck is 41 inches above the ground. I added a skyhook (electric hoist) to the garage ceiling to lift the genny into the bed of the truck.

We added power inlet on the front of the trailer for the geeny power cord.

You can run it out of the truck bed. Just leave it there. I run a cable with lock through mine. It worked well. I have a Yamaha 3000 and it weighs around 120lb. Two people can lift it in and out pretty easy.

For those who leave and run their genny from the truck, what do you do to protect them from the weather or are they weather protected?

Many are left in the weather for years with no problems. We work a craft show circuit and many vendors have them mounted in trucks or trailers , chained down of course . I cover mine with a plywood box when underway .

I made a cover for my remote start 3000i to keep it out of sight, then converted the cover so I can run the generator with the cover on.

We then moved the 3000i to the top of our houseboat.

This is why some of us buy two 2000 watt inverter generators (50 plus lbs) to hook up in parallel instead of a bigger generator. Plus, if you're not going to run the air conditioner (fall, spring) you only need to bring one.

Edit: I added 200w of solar and no longer use a generator. I also live in a colder climate and do not use air conditioning.

I will also support the idea that these generators are meant to be outside. A lot of the utility trucks that the cable company around here has with the boom lift have a honda 3000 mounted permanently on the extended rear bumper, so they are outside 24/7 and see regular use. That being said, to keep it shiny and new you may wish to cover it if it will be stored outdoors.
I would say if you are going to keep in the pickup bed to run it might help to put something to try to isolate the vibration from the bed to keep it from becoming an amplifier for the sound. Something like pieces of that anti fatigue flooring or garden kneeler material would probably do the trick.

I went with a more "permanent" solution

Not a Honda 3000 but the Predator 3500 is the same weight and size.

Forum won't render an image from Google Drive so a link will have to do.

Harbor freight sells a hitch mounted lift as well. Slides into the receiver then is a hand cranked winch lift. I ran mine in the bed for the last ten years. I now take it out because of having a 5er and do not want it that close to my head.

So easy to use I also use it to lift a full fuel container or two rather than lifting.

When the "Crane" is not in use it swings next to and slightly under the bed rail, fitting totally underneath my tri-fold hard tonneau cover.

I just leave the generator in the bed of the truck when running. I pull it to the center and toward the tailgate so it gets full air flow. If raining a large golf umbrella takes care of keeping it dry.

FWIW, the crane comes in handy when it's necessary to haul things that are a little to heavy to lift comfortably, like a lawnmower that you are taking to the shop, etc.

I chose the "crane" so I didn't have to futz with two generators in parallel. To me it just meant twice the trouble with fueling, maintenance, etc.

Sell it and go buy 2- Honda eu2200i. I can't lift the 3000 either, that's why we went with the 2.
