If anyone is has a need , I have 2 portable steps I have from our old motorhome , one has folding legs and the other is aluminum , nice looking spot over looking the lake btw , noticed you don't have a surge protecter , with seeing that electric box and the way the outlets are installed I would be worried .

You’re right about excellent facilities at a great rate. Since this is a Corps of Engineer park, with our senior pass we only pay $12 a night for full hookups. What a deal! By the way, the restrooms and showers at Gun Creek were extremely clean and well maintained.
The issue with the 50amp outlet being upside down was fixed by park maintenance the next day. I was waiting for the maintenance man to get shocked while he was working on the box.
We were at the campground for three days. The weather was chilly and extremely windy but that wind made for great campfires. We also had a couple of nice sunsets.

As a guy who piddles around with electricity on a daily basis, I always find it humorous when someone gets nervous around me when I am working on it. My wife was a nervous wreck holding the light for me as I put a cord on our new dryer. Pointing out that the cord in question was not currently (<-pun intended) plugged into any source of power did nothing to calm her down

I would have been much happier if the power to the pedestal would have been off.

[QUOTE=ependydad;842802]We use this one:
RV Safety Step
We have one of those as well. Bought last fall and the friction sticktion tape is coming off already! Works well for us otherwise!

We also have a spot or two where the tape is lifting. Same with our RV steps, though.

Some places install 110 receptacles up side down so that if it were pulled out a little and something metal hit the plug it would hit the ground and not the blades first. Or they could have been drunk, one of the two.

Not really commercial apps use the ground on top incase something pulls down on the plug then it somethings fall on it will not hit the hot and common. In fact my whole house is like that, I asked the electrician that up graded my whole system before we bought it, use to have wire and ball lines. Pulled all new wire and sockets, breaker and increased from a old fuse 50 amp panel (screw in fuse type) to a 200 amp. I don't know how old you are you might not remember that kinda of wiring....

Safer
I wired my entire house from the meter on and all have the grounds at the top. It just takes getting used to, but makes sense. The guy probably tripped the breaker before rotating the 50A socket. Most government parks have electricians to do these things.

I know the wire and glass knobs you post of very well.....
Anyway my post is based on what I know about residential wiring where the ground leg is down.

Well, all the electricians I've had, always put the ground lug up for the reasons stated. I have encountered the old Knob & nail wiring several times. Electricians will tell you it is safer than romex as the two lines are separated. The main problem is most knob and nail wiring is 14 ga and not heavy enough for todays wiring. I never use 14 ga for any house wiring, 12-2 w/ ground or heavier depending on the loads intended.

Conventional wisdom keeps flip-flopping between ground up or ground down. The NEC (national electric code) is silent on the subject, except at one time they did require grounds on "critical circuits" in medical facilities to be up, to avoid blowing the breaker if something fell and contacted it. For whatever reason, that spread and became the 'norm'. But lately, its moving back to the conventional way. I'm guessing that electricians are getting tired of callbacks due to people complaining that they are "upside down".
Feel free to put them in however you feel, there is no right or wrong way. I myself put them in with the grounds down, as I have seen some electronic equipment with "wall-wart" power supplies that have polarized plugs (that only insert one way) where they would be upside down and more prone to fall out if the outlet was ground up.

I ended up buying a Camco adjustable step similar to what ependydad showed in post #13. It doesn’t take up a lot of room when stored, it is very sturdy (rated for 1000 lbs.), and each leg is adjustable to compensate for uneven ground. I bought it on Amazon for $61 and some change with free shipping.

Thumbs up! We use both of ours all of the time.
