USB charger problem

I'm a new guy on the forum with what sounds like an old problem - my usb charging ports died. I ordered a replacement and started to install it I ran into a curious wiring setup. The USB/Cigarette adapter require a set of pos/neg wires each. What I found were two positive leads coming tied together with a butt splice and then sent out as two seperate leads. The same was true for the negative leads.

I've never seen anything like this before. Can someone explain why this was done?

The factory has tied into a wire that continues on to another item needing 12v. So they spliced into it and made two leads for the USB, and the spliced wire carries on to another spot.

I use my cigarette lighter and a 75 watt inverter, it works far better for me than my USB charger.
