The metal base rod of my anode rod is showing near the plug, but the rest of the rod still has probably 80% of the anode left.....plenty more years of service. Like Arn, I will probably replace when it is somewhere 75% gone.

All,
This thread has been very helpful. I pulled the anode last night, flushed the HWH, then reinstated with telfon tape. Looks like I got plenty of zinc left for a while. Thanks everyone. Heading out for the weekend. later,

I went to check mine today as part of my first time winterizing, and noticed I don't have the right sized socket to take it out. Any idea what size socket I need?

I think the socket for my Suburban heater was 1 1/16"
