West from Georgia

This June '13 we're headed out to Grand Canyon, and 4-corners area. First long trip in our Flagstaff 21FBRS. Be out about 5 weeks. Any suggestions?

Our family has a vacation home at Big Canoe, just outside Jasper. Very nice area.

Albuquerque and the Painted Desert are well worth a visit and should be right on your way to the Grand Canyon. Enjoy your trip!

Painting the painted Desert ;-)

Thanx Cap'n Mike, I'd forgotten about the Painted Desert. We'll be attending an art convention in Albuquerque on our way out. Am looking forward to doing some plein-aire painting enroute.

Off I-40 you will find many things of interest. Near Winslow is the Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater. Around Flagstaff is the Lowell Observatory, Arizona Pioneer Museum, the Skyride up towards the San Francisco Peaks. The last two are on US 180, the direct route from Flag to the Grand Canyon. If you aree not staying in the GC Park, you might like Williams - it's on the 'Mother Road', and you can get inclusive rates for the RV Park and the Grand Canyon Railroad. DW and I did that a couple of years ago, and then moved on to the Trailer Park at the GC. Plenty to see and enjoy.

Been back and forth to Perry, Ga., Jax, and a few other Southern sites in my career, and when going in the summer went the I-40, and winter, I-10.

The trip on the I-10 doesn't offer much in the way of scenery, but you can cut North from about anywhere. The 40 has less climbing and more to see, and is closer to the sites you want.

From Mesa Verde, go over Wolf Creek Pass and down into the Colorado Springs area. Garden of the Gods is very pretty. Also, Black Canyon of the Gunnison River in Colorado. Before you get there, on the Mesa Verde side of the mountains, the railroad from Durango to Silver Creek is one of those "must do" things. And the Royal Gorge is S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R.
