What is the preferred cell phone provider among campers?
I've been with ATT for the past eleven years. I'm considering a switch to US Cellular. It would save me money and I hear their customer service is the best. I am just wondering about coverage in remote areas? There must be a lot of different subscribers out there with comments, anyone care to share?

All carriers have faults, however I have had great luck with Verizon and most customer service experiences have been good. Overall the coverage has been satisfying, so I will stick with Verizon

Well I am in Vermont where any cell service provider has issues due to lack of adequate cell towers (thanks to stringent permit requirements) but I have been on Verizon for over 10 years. Just got the new iPhone 5 with the tethering and now I can connect to the internet even if the campground does not have wi-fi

Does any body remember who Verizon was before it was Verizon, 1997 is when I bought my first cell phone and at that time the service was going from analog to digital, so from 1997 to now I have had the same service and it is Verizon.

I retired from General Telephone in 1996 after 30 years. In 1997 they became Verizon.

We had US Cellular for years and although don't travel much it has performed pretty good as to reception.....we recently switched to a new company: Republic Wireless (our US Cellular was costing us around $170 per month for the 2 of us) & Republic Wireless is going to cost us around $43 per month for the 2 of us....kicker is Republic Wireless is intended to run through Wi-Fi when available and Sprint when not on Wi-Fi....is has a few glitches but is very acceptable with our monthly price savings.

In the Denver area it was Air Touch before Verizon. We travel extensively and I can count on one hand how many times we did not have service. Even in most mountain areas of Colorado Verizon has coverage.

Like lberjet we use Verizon for cell and MiFi. All cell phone carriers have areas with no coverage, especially in the western states. Of course it’s not limited to the west, my home state of Missouri has large areas in the south central part of the state without any cell phone coverage. If you’re planning to travel the country then I’d stick with either AT&T or Verizon.

We have a local company here is Wyoming called union wireless. There service is great all over in Wyoming is spots where Verizon has no service at all. And when in bigger cities can either run off of AT&T or tmobile. I have and iPhone that runs off of 2g speed and it is just about as fast as Verizon's 3G and its about $80 cheaper a month between me and the wife. We have unlimited everything for $98 a month for two iPhones.

We switched to Consumer Cellular which has tiered service/pay plans, from Verizon. We had 2 basic flip phones with verizon with no extras and it was costing us about $90/mo. We now have have smart phones with 3g service at about half the cost and twice the phone of Verizon.
Consumer Cellular is piggybacking on the AT&T backbone.

We have had Verizon forever and it seems to be the best for us. DH has an original iPad with ATT and coverage isn't nearly as good as our iPhones. We initially went with Verizon because they were the only carrier who had coverage at our rural TN farm. I have used my phone all over the country (except the Pacific NW and Alaska) and had decent coverage most places.

I've had AT&T, Verizon, Southern Link and a couple of others. They all have their pros and cons. There are some places that it doesn't matter which service you have, there's just no signal. Thankfully they're few and far between.
Right now we have Consumer Cellular and are happy with it. Their data plan is a little lean but we aren't big users of data so it works for us. As said above, it runs on AT&T's network so the coverage is good most places.
