i use a map and a compass
we have the cheapest tom tom you can get!! i have used it a couple times to just get there when i get close. everytime i fire the thing up it usually tells me to go a completly diffrent way. the thing usually tells me to go an hour or so out of the way. but since i don't travel for fun much the cheapest one was the one my wife wanted so i rarely see it

You need to adjust the settings in your TomTom and may need to update it via computer. You can adjust things like 'Quickest/Shortest Route vs Main Highways' and that sounds like your issue.

never had a GPS since i'm a map geek and prefer to do my own navigation.
but having this will allow us to take it in our TV on trips. i'll have to get a dash mount for it.

Check out GPSCITY.com and their ram mounts, they have something to fit just about anything, good prices and usually ship the same day, when I say just about anything, they even have pedestal mounts for laptop computers for those of you using GPS plugins on the laptop, it's the same kind of mounts that cops use in their cars for the MDT computers. Good stuff out there.

Even with a GPS you best use a map as a backup. I have had 2 differant GPS units take me down bad roads. First time was no big deal, just the truck no TT. We were visiting wineries in the Texas hill country and it took me down a dirt road 10 miles into nowhere. Last time was a big deal. I had picked up the TT in Elkhart and on the way back I needed gas. No problem I just punched up the POIs and selected gas stations and selected the nearest one. The GPS took me down a narrow paved road that turned into a dead end dirt road. I had never backed anything bigger than a 18 ft boat. Using the last driveway on that dirt road I learned to back the Rockwood 2604. I got it turned around with no damage to the TV or TT just my nerves. Bottom line when It comes to anything as someone once said TRUST BUT VERIFY. I do love em in the big cities.

Garmin 265WT. Free traffic info (with a couple ads for hotels and gas stations once in a while). The traffic antenna is built into the power cord. Blue tooth to hands free your cell phone. Seems to lock in on the satellites quickly.
No GPS has perfect maps I had several units that took me to a "T" intersection and said to go straight

Funny little story. ATVing in the bush. All the GPS units wouldn't work or batteries were dead. 5 guys sitting there wondering what to do. No sun overcast day. I had GPScape built into my machine but didn't waypoint the trucks and I hadn't paid attention to it all day. I always carried the good ol' back up compass. Pulled it out and headed north to the road and found the trucks. There had to be somewhere around $1000 worth of GPS equipment and we were lost. I stick to maps and compasses and the great adventure of getting lost!!! Adds excitement to any outing!!

My wife gets a big laugh out of our GPS when I ignore it and not follow its suggested route... It really sounds a bit miffed

We have a basic TomTom One that so far has been all we need. (However the updates are expensive so haven't done that yet)

Same here. I fight with it when I don't want to go the way it says, but eventually it sees my way. I hear "turn around as soon as possible" a lot. But after you go a mile or so it will calculate a new course.
You can get these puppies on sale for ~$80.

I run a Garmin nuvi 1350 in the truck. Working with a blackberry with internet access it gets me close to all my drilling locations and close to everything I also run a Garmin Rhino 530 for a hand held. I love this one. It has saved me a lot.
