What Qualifies for "visited" status

Many people have a list of states/provinces they visit. Was wonder what qualifies a state/Prov as meeting the standards. For example if I am burning through NH on the way from Maine to VT we do not check off NH as a visited state. We (I) feel we either must spend a night in that prov/state or our dogs must do a #2 Da Missus says this concept is dumb and if we cross the border on foot or on a set of wheels it is checked off. A couple of friends said they have "visited" an area and all they did was drive through it at 55mph

Just throwing this out there

There is NO consensus. Each person/family does what they feel is right.

For us, we have to spend a night.

X2

I have be through every state west of the Mississippi River when I was a kid (continental US) but couldn't begin to tell you what states we stayed over night in or just drove through since It was before the DW & kids I have not counted them.

Your rules....................... everyone's idea is theirs. Do you have to stay overnight or just spend a lot of time visiting attractions.......... or just drive through (you were there) It is what works for you.

We count them if we've spent time there. Even at the airport. However over the years we've actually gone back and spent time in every state but Alaska.

TOWTA and I have camped in all the lower 48 and have visited Alaska, but not camped there. Have not visited Hawaii and probably won't.

Does it count if you fly over a state enroute to another, without landing? Seems that would be the same as driving thru a state without stopping for the night.

We mark it as visited if we visit the state to see things (not drive through). Some places we have visited, like Connecticut, we visited attractions but stayed in Massachusetts.

Maybe "visited" should be changed to "slept there".

For me, it's sleeping in the state. 10 western states down and a bunch to go (US-Canada).

I have been in every state of the Union except Idaho and North Dakota, but since we bought our first RV, we're only counting the states we've camped in, for at least one night. So far, 36 (or maybe 37...have to re-count) out of the lower 48.

You have to boondock for a month using only solar for power. My map remains blank.

In our earlier years of RV'ing,,,,,,we put it on the map if we drove through it. Now,,,,we don't put it on the map until we've at least inhaled at least once in that state. To each his/her own.

I have visited all 50 states. Drove through CT and DE without touching ground, but still had a really good look around, so I feel that I visited them too.

"visited" is, I guess, whatever you decide it to be. We have spent months in Rocky NP hiking almost every trail in the park. I must say, I kinda smile to myself when people in conversation say they have "visited" RNP and then describe the one road they were on as they drove through there! Oh well, I guess they did "visit" RNP, who am I to suggest they didn't!

If I touch it it is visited. A quick waltz around Four Corners would garner four "visited" states in about as many steps...

We take it literally: visit, or 'been there.' New Hampshire may be one of our longest 'drive through' states when traveling to Maine, because we love to browse in the liquor store!

Actually,,,the Four Corners was placed about 1800 feet too far to the east, but with the surveying instruments they had back then,,,,they did pretty well. And when you're out there lying in 4 states at the same time,,,,who's going to quibble about a few feet out in the middle of nowhere, right?

To each his own. We have states we don't care to go to, so if we drive thru them and stop for fuel, we count it. Others we've done that in, but would like to visit, so we haven't checked those off, as a reminder we want to visit there.
