When to buy an new one?

Hi all. Just a curiosity question. How long do you keep your TT before you buy an new/newer one?

Ours is a 2007 Rockwood Signature Ultralite that we bought in 2008. We only use it a few times a year. There is nothing majorly wrong with it. It is beginning to have some exterior issues, but so far nothing major.

I was talking to a guy about them the other day. He said most people keep them for three years, then they're onto the next one.

Obviously we don't want to spend unnecessary money. But we would like to sell it or trade it in while it still has some value.

Any thoughts? Opinions? Thanks!

Whenever I get the itch for a new one, I get it. Kidding aside I think financials play a big roll in that decision.

If the current unit works for you, why buy a new 1 ??

We have a 2008 TT model that still serves our needs presently, though we will probably move up to a 5th wheel or motor home when the missus retires and we will do longer trips.

Retaining a RV for a certain length of time can come from a cauldron of reasons. Health,job loss,divorce,upside down finacing,other hobbies,ect! Some buy on a impulse whim then (Trade/Buy) another in a Very short period of time,this kind of buying drives up the resale price,causing longer ownership or Loss to sell unit! Youroo!!

I had a 2002 TT up until February of this year. It served me well and had no major issues but......

The floor plan wasn't terribly good. The bathroom was tiny, I mean tiny for even a camper. Storage was several small pockets instead of an actual storage space.

Plus, it was entry level. While it had nothing wrong right then I could smell expenses on the winds. It had the factory roof, weatherstripping, most of the factory fixtures, converter, furnace and AC.

Then, I stepped into my 5er. All I had been looking for and then some. Plus I had financially opened myself up where I could afford it. I'll have it paid off in five years and will hopefully keep it at least 10.

I had a 2007 TT before upgrading to a 2014 5er. The TT was still in great shape, we just wanted to upgrade to a more spacious and easier to tow 5er. So, 7 years for me, but if the original had been a 5th wheel we likely wouldn't have bought something else.

I'll keep my TT at least until I retire in 7 years and then depending on how much we travel I will probably step up to a 5er. You retired guys get to have all the fun!

We're usually on a 3-5yr rotation, not because we have to but for the improvements that come with the newer rigs are appealing.
In addition, we find that most folks looking to buy used are generally interested in something 5yrs or newer (we always sell privately) and that helps with our rotation schedule.
At the end of the day...whatever makes your camping experience more enjoyable...just do it! ,)

Three to five years depending on how we feel about ouer current unit. One only lasted 9 months.

Had my last one 14 years got this one this year. Don't know if this one will hold up that long sure hope so. If not will get real old unit and rebuild it.

We bought our first TT a 2015 Salem five months ago. I wish we had looked around more. I now want a Prime time Lacrosse or Sanibel because I like the floor plan a lot better. I can't stand the couch not facing the TV. No dealers carry them here in Arkansas so my husband is safe for now.

Just depends on how well you take care of it and/or if the unit still servers the same purpose, kids might have grown etc., if it ain't broke why fix it?

Our first fiver we kept for 14 years bought used at 2 years old perfect condition - kept it until we happened upon a used fifth wheel at a local car dealer lot that was filthy cheap in perfect condition ( they had no clue what they got in trade!) so we jumped on that one - traded it after two years on our first ever brand new current 2014 Crusader - hoping to keep it a loonnng time - it is beautiful !!

The dog hates the TT. The boy is a junior in college this year, so that's where most of our money is going right now.

We're taking the TT into the shop tomorrow, as we have something on the roof that Ken can't / doesn't know how to fix. Depending on what we find out there will determine our next move!
