Where Do All The Used RVs Go?

I am amazed, and grateful, that most RV dealers take trade ins. I have no idea how long it would have taken me to sell my last travel trailer, or if it would have even sold.

My dealer gave me a great deal for my trade and a good deal on my new Windjammer in July. I notice, though, that my old travel trailer is still on their lot waiting for a buyer. In fact, there are many used RVs on their lot -- possibly a 50/50 mix. This particular dealer is running out of space on his lot and there is no way he can bring any more new units in because of this. Surely there is someplace to send those used trailers to.

Where do they go?

Bruce

There are auction lots just like for autos that don't sell. They may take a loss on them at the lot, or they may make more than they would selling them retail.

X 2 also I know some of the older ones are sold to hunters who park them out in the woods and use them just during hunting season. Later RJD

When I traded mine last camper in I was told most are sold to first time RV owners as a cheaper way to get started. I know some older units end up as hunting shacks and the like. I've also seen the tandem axle frames turned into heavy duty car hauler or utility trailers when the camper body is shot.

X2

Our last camper an 06 has been sold two times since we bought the 13........we bought it used in 07........(Out of 4 sales of our old camper our dealer sold the same camper 4 times)........ I sold one (the 1973) outright to a hunter that was going to put it on his land for a hunting cabin........ I also sold the 88 to a guy that buys and flips campers.....Our dealer sells some to a smaller used car lot that resells them (many actually)......... Many people including us often buy a lightly used trailer instead of buying a high dollar new one........ Knowing our dealer well they probably in reality sell as many used as they do new campers........ I even bought a flat car hauler fifth wheel trailer from our RV dealer / they also had a converted fifth wheel camper flat trailer for sale as well that I would guess they took in trade...... Around here many campers have been converted to flat utility trailers.

Many come to southern Calif. and line the streets in industrial areas and under freeways to become permanent living units for the homeless. And in stupid CA no one cares! In fact they can now go on welfare?

I never thought about this before, considering the manufacturer' spit RV's out thousands per year and the old one simply troddle off to a farmers field to rust away.

I'm pretty sure it's a yearly thing. When I was a kid, my parents had an old 1980's Starcraft that they sold to a guy that said he wanted it specifically for this.

In Joplin, Mo there is a salvage yard that specializes in used campers many are junked out and the parts are sold.

Where do the old RVs go?

There is 40% mark-up in new RVs so the dealers can just about give the trades away for nearly nothing.

Bought a used one years ago. Kept it for 15 great seasons. Traded it in at 35 years old for a brand new expensive piece of trouble.

RE: Here's my 69 Shasta. It looks just like mine - not sure what make it was, but I bought the bare frame, put in a floor and used it as a flat bed for 10 yrs or so, and put sides on about 4 yrs ago. It becomes a float for our Lions Club Christmas Parade every year, and moves all kinds of stuff during the year.

Cheers
