Where to find 50 amp Connector or Cable

Greetings,

The more I read, the less I understand. Somebody has probably addressed this dilemma somewhere in this forum... but I haven't found it.

My son recently bought a fifth wheeler with a 50 amp, 3 prong female connection. The RV came with a 50 amp 15 foot, 3 prong female to 4 prong male cable. The RV is located 65 feet from his power pole which has a 50 amp, 4 prong connection.

My son bought a 75 foot 50 amp cable which has 4 prong connections (male & female). (Something like this: (50 Amp - 75 ft) RV Extension Cord with Pull Handles and Lighted End (9513T) )

If he connects the 75 foot cable to the 15 foot cable, everything works, but he would prefer, to keep the run as short as possible, just use the 75 foot cable.

How can he connect his 50 amp 4 prong 75 foot cable directly to the RV 50 amp 3 prong connection? Does somebody sell a 50 amp 4 prong male to 50 amp 3 prong female connectors? (I have found 50 to 30 amp cables but not 50 to 50 amp.)

If a connector does not exist, where can he find a short, 1 foot 50 amp 4 prong male to 50 amp 3 prong female cable?

Thanks!

Pat

I suspect the RV is 30 amp, not 50, with the 3 prong connection.
I've never seen a 3 prong 50a connection on an RV.

It's 50 amp, on the camper end the connection is only 3 prong and the ground is a tab on the outside.

Thanks Turbs,

When you say the ground is a tab, does that tab have to be grounded? What does it look like?

I guess I should have said conductor, not prong...

The shiny part on the right of Turbs' picture is the 4th conductor.

MLatter, I am glad you clarified that. I was going to look for it on the outside... of the RV!!!!

I see two options to use a single cable.

1...replace the actual receptacle on the fifth wheel with the modern 4-prong male receiver.
2...cut off the existing 4-prong female end of the power cable and replace it with a compatible connector. Don't have a clue where to get that connector but an electrical supply store should know.

Doing the math here... If it came with a 15' 50a cord, then adding a 50' 50a extension should do the trick. Take back the 75' and get a 50'.

Thanks

Since we have limited electrical skills, hopefully, there is something out there that is a little easier. THANKS

Emm-Dee,

Thanks. The more I think about it, the more I think that replacing the trailer 50 amp 3 prong female connector with a 50 amp 4 prong female connector is the best solution... once I figure out how to do it... does anybody know how to do that?

Thanks.

The voltage loss over a 15 foot is immeasurable so why worry about it if this is a concern . Also do not leave the cable highly wound as it would act a as a transformer and overheat.

Logical Solution

MLatter,

Great Suggestion. I will check to see if he can return the 75' for a 50' to the internet company where he bought the cable.

I called my son and he will call the company.

Thanks.

I am still befuddled that the trailer came with (according to my son) a 15' 50 amp 3 to 4 prong cable, but a similar, shorter cable is nowhere to be found. I will drive to his trailer place in the country and check the cable markings... I am starting to wonder if it's truly a 50 amp cable.

Thanks B & B,

He is worried about the total run of 90' being too long and overheating. So the additional 15' makes no significant difference?

I will check to see if the cable is wound.

Thanks again

Possible Solution

Thanks to all that replied.

I have found on Amazon and Walmart what I think is a possible solution:

Camco 55562 18" 50 AMP Standard Male / 50 AMP 90 Degree Locking Female PowerGrip Adapter

https://goo.gl/IGQbqh

Does anybody see any reason why this would not work?

Thanks!!!
