Which gets better fuel mileage, a dually or a SRW

A friend told me what he was getting on his dually and my SRW was doing better, fuel mileage. Pulling different campers

Dually will get worse, but the difference is so small you probably could not calculate it. It all boils down to how much weight your towing. RVing has very little to with fuel economy and more to do with enjoying your RV experience.

Agree with the previous post.

Tune will make a difference. So will deletes. Difference between SRW and Dually is minimal.

For me, I'll take the added stability with the Dually.

I really didn’t know, I have deleted the emissions on my truck but I was still beating my friend by two miles to the gallon before the delete. Now of course it’s three miles more to the gallon

Worrying about getting better mileage when you’re RV-ing is like trying to see if there’s a way to get more people safely on a motorcycle.

Kind of a lost cause.

Some of them do. Some of them don't. Some of them are black. Some are red. Most are white.

The rest are all alike.

I would be more concerned about being attacked by a herd of wingless chickens after leaving a Buffalo Wild Wing Resteraunt.

But for some, the truck could be their daily driver and any increase in mileage is appreciated.

Fuel mileage is considerably close to both. Payload is not, and auxiliary fuel tanks (now that I have one, it's a MUST!!! It's a #1 item), stability, overall payload, is way more important than a probable .038928 mpg.

My friend probably has a different rear end than my truck. He said he was getting about 15 around town and I’m getting close to twenty. And his is a Ford and I have a Silverado

Trade trucks and I’ll bet you’ll still beat him. MPG has a Lot to do with driving styles. From a tractor trailer to a Prius, I’ve always gotten better fuel mileage in a vehicle than the hubby.

Speed also matters. In my small MH, you can almost see the gas gauge move downward the faster I go. There's a big difference between 60mph and 70mph.

There are many variables between the two that it's near impossible to answer. If you had a 3/ 4 ton single and 1 ton dually both same weight, engine, final drive etc. The 3/4 ton single would have better mpg due to the friction loss on the dually.

Why does it even matter?

Have you been in hibernation that you haven’t notice increasing pump prices?

The best I've seen for hwy use is 21 mpg at 70 mph. Strictly city, haven't checked but probably 14 possibly 15.

< 1 MPG ain't gonna make that much difference. If you're concerned about that focus on tuning, proper tire inflation, and speed.

If that is an issue, then maybe big trucks and campers is the wrong choice to camp!

Perhaps a Toyota Prius and a small tent is in order...

I have both. They are both used daily, side by side pulling campers. We always pull at 65 mph. The srw always gets better milage than the drw but not by much. I pull from Indiana to Manitoba so I run thru the whole gamete of driving conditions and I an supersized at how stable the srw is. I thought there would be a big difference but there isn't. If it were for my own personal use I would probably go with a srw.
