Which GPS do you all use?

I use a Tom Tom at work and with it set to "quickest time" it will try to take you down roads that don't make sense, and when you ignore its directions and go with the road that does make sense the time to destination is usually reduced when it recalculates. Go figure!
For personal use I use a Garmin Nuvi, can't remember the model but its navigation is much better. Get one with the lifetime map updates and it won't be obsolete for a while. I do like the screen shot of the RVND though.

We use the Garmin Nuvi 2460LMT with the ecoRoute that monitors the engine functions. Got it last fall and it is a pretty good unit. Switch it from truck to wife's Caddy. Amazing what goes on with the engines in both vehicles.

Garmin all the way, best IMHO. I don't trust the smart phones because they still rely on G3 or greater signal, Honestly I always try to find a campsite where my phone has no signal...

I've been using a Garmin 465T and for the most part, really like it. It has some good POI that I've downloaded, campgrounds, truck stops, etc.

I have been using Magellan's since GPS units began selling. My latest is the RoadMate 3045MU. It shows all the RV campgrounds at your command within 25 miles of your position.

Magellan's have over 6 million POIs. These POIs will change about every 18 months. Places being built, ATMs, going out of business, ETC.

I have two GPS units, newest one I use all the time and a backup just in case the DW disagrees and argues with the GPS directions.
I also us the WalMart Rand McNally Road Atlas which list all of the WalMarts & Sam's stores by address and zip code just in case the DW loses the argument with the GPS!

CoPilot Live and several of the other smart phone navigation apps do not rely on G3 at all. They work just fine where there is no phone signal. They do, however, use up a big chunk of your phone's memory. All of their maps are stored internally in the phone.

A GPS should not be solely relied on for directions. They are not infalliable as they are only as good as the company who did the maps. We use a Tom Tom 330XL but I always use MS Streets and trips and plan the routes and print out maps as a backup. When we start on a leg of a trip I try to memorize the routes on the map and then when the GPS trys to lead us astray I know. Old rule of thumb, when it feels wrong it probably is. Also have Streets and Trips running on DW's laptop that she uses for movies etc while we are on the road just in case.

I too use S&T to plan a route the day before along with Google maps for a satellite view. Once I'm satisfied with my route I plan it on my GPS and if necessary force the GPS using the VIA function to follow that route.

I use a combination of paper maps, google maps on my iPhone (free) and my latest toy NAVFREE.

NAVFREE is a free smart phone app (both iPhone and android devices). It operates similar to most simple GPS systems. It is gets it's data from OpenStreetMap. And it is free.

Currrently use a Garmin. On our last trip we were w/in 5 miles of destination and the unit kept saying "U-turn.. U-turn" We have a friend who calls their GPS "the lying B..ch"... now ours has the same nickname... ha!

Rand 7710... for RV's I don't think there is anything better. You can customize it to your RV....

Don't need no stinkin' GPS..... DW gets lost even the way home, even with her Garmin. Had to put a big pink rock out on the front street. (I hate pink). When she's driving and I suggest she turns right (if needed), she ALWAYS turns left. 'Nuf said!


I simply scan the road maps and rely on the good 'ol photographic memory. The I5 for example, simply runs north/south. How hard is that? RVing is so much fun because you you just get in the truck and keep going until you get somewhere, hehe.

Rand Mcnally RVND7710 not sure if i like it yet, have to use it real time first and see if i trust it. I'm anal when it comes to route planning, using maps, atlas, internet and the gps. I hope to learn to trust it
