Wooden sign - include children names?

I have a very nice camp sign that a woodworking friend made for us last season. My first thought when I saw it was that I didn't want to hang a sign with the names of my kids on it. I have a security background, so I tend to over-think things like this. Haven't used the sign yet, but we're getting ready to camp with the guy that made it over Memorial Day weekend. Does anyone else have an issue with kid's names on a sign for all to see (complete strangers) or am I just paranoid. Lol

I would not do it either. I don't write my kids first names on anything. Last name sure but putting a first name could be asking for trouble in this day and age.

My wife doesn't even want our last name on anything because of the security concerns.

I wouldn't do it either for the reasons Toddupton stated.

PS
I'm the same as SilverArrowPro wife.

Glad I'm not the only one.

I agree with everything you said, except the "in this day and age". Statistically, kids are safer today than they have been in the past 35 years. We just hear about things more than we used to thanks to the 24 hour news cycle.

But, even if it was 35 years ago, I still wouldn't have wanted to put my kids names on a sign. ☺️

In today's world a stranger can provide more personal information that might drawn a young child into harm's way. Example: Your mom said we can get ice cream. Your brother Bobby is waiting at the car....

A camp sign is far from what Facebook can do. I say go for it. If camping in scary places don't go there at all. I educated my children about strangers and what to do and or not to do.

B and B I agree that we already have a lot of personal info out there (FB, school lists, etc...). But, in those cases, I can somewhat choose who sees their information by limiting who I friend or what lists they're on.

If a complete stranger comes up to my 1st grader, but knows her name and all of her family members' names it would be very difficult for her to discern a dangerous situation.

Fortunately, most people in this world are good people. But, the sign just caused me to second guess whether or not it was a good idea. I also don't want to hurt the feelings of the guy that put a lot of time into it. So, I probably use it for memorial day weekend, but maybe not afterwards.

I see people with their kids names on their signs all the time, weekenders and mostly seasonals.

I see the signs all the time. We chose to simply use our last name and say "The Asquared family". Our first names are not on it. I also won't ever put those stickers on my car that say child's name and sports number as that is an invitation for bad things too.

I actually wouldn't mind just the last name.

As I said originally, this was a sign that was made for us by a family friend. I didn't design it.

We're camping with this family friend over Memorial Day and he's going to wonder where his sign is. He made a similar one for his own family and doesn't have an issue displaying it.

Wow. My wife and I raised 2 boys and 2 girls and help put them threw 4 different top shelf colleges. All you young parents need to put on your big boy pants and stop being scared of everything

I wouldn't call myself young, but I guess it's all relative.

I'm not sure what college (top shelf or not) has to do with this discussion.

I don't think anyone said they were scared. Some behavior is just more reckless and unnecessary. I would prefer to play it safe(r).

X2. Why take a chance with young kids?

Actually it is not being scared of everything but rather being aware of dangers in our society. I grew up learning an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I apply that to my daily life. I do believe CG to be safer than the general public. I don't think there will be a problem with displaying the sign for the weekend. I just feel I will never obtain a sign with the names myself.

Here is an article that shows how dangerous releasing a small amount of info can be.

Enough with the paranoia. Put the sign up and relax.

I've already shared my view but I think you should do what you want to.

Thanks Terier. That's definitely what it comes down to. I think in order to save hurt feelings, I'll use the sign for the one camping trip.

Unfortunately, it can't be modified to remove the kids' first names due to the way it was built.

B and B, that's funny! ☺️
