That's twice I've heard basically that,, Yes, Mr Salesman you are correct. I can hook up to anything on this lot and tow it down the road. Especially here is flat ass Mississippi, But what about when I get to not flat Tennessee? Or even not flatter Colorado? He Said ,"But it says 16,500 Lbs on Trailer life .com
Thats the whole source of your info? It should be a law that these guys have to have some kind of Basic Knowledge of safe towing weights/ sizes , etc to assist unknowing Customers. And be held accountable some how. I know its a buyer beware world. But....

It amazes me how ignorant the RV dealers will be to make a sale. I had one telling me I could pull a 32 foot toy hauler, fully loaded with my old 1500. It also amazed me that never once when I did purchase my 37 foot toy hauler, did the dealer I bought it from ask what type of vehicle I was towing it with. I did it all online and over the phone, if I had showed up there with a Chevy Colorado, would they have installed the hitch and sent me on my way?? Probably. lol

Sometimes it's ignorance. I think a lot of the time it's deliberate avoidance or outright lies. Some things I've learned about this lifestyle...

• Do all your own research on both TV and trailer. THOROUGH research.
• Don't buy a trailer with a GVWR higher than your fully loaded TV can safely tow.
• "Dry weight" is borderline meaningless. Actual weight (gotten after taking it to a scale yourself) is key.
• It's good to have DIY skills. VERY GOOD.

Agreed. I'm so glad I did my research based on all the outstanding information on this forum. Instead of buying a trailer that was way more than my 1500 could handle, I upgraded to a 2500 diesel then got the trailer I knew it could safely pull.

I have minimal experience(in a lot of things) in sales people at RV lots, but I have been told twice "it'll pull it" or "anything on this lot" and they had some big ones. I think most of it is inexperience. They just don't know.

The first TT I looked at I did so driving my SUV, intentionally because I was not buying, just looking. I told the dealer that and what my TV was and of course they put together "the deal".
I did not buy because I wanted to look around at other products. The salesman bumped me up to the sales managers office and then to the owners office. They all tried to tell me how stupid I was for not taking "the deal" (with a WDH included). I stood my ground and did my homework.
I'm glad I did and I'm glad I found this forum.
All said and done I purchased a 2016 F-250 2WD CC SB 3.55 Lariat. Then I went trailer hunting with some perimeters in mind for towing.
I ended up purchasing a Flagstaff Super Lite 27 BEWS. The whole rig full of fuel (TV and TT) on the scales is around 14,500 lbs. The TV is rated for 19,000 lbs. of towing capacity. I'm happy with those numbers. The TV pulls and stops the TT just fine.
But yes, dealer salesman have one thing in mind. Sales.

Funny - my experience was the other way around. When I bought my first TT (a Flagstaff 26' super light) I was a babe in the woods when it came to towing. My salesman asked what kind of truck I had, and (letting testosterone get the better of me) I proudly proclaimed I had a Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax engine that could tow anything on his lot. His reply? That my trailer wouldn't be a problem, but trust him, he had plenty of campers on the lot I couldn't (or shouldn't) tow.

I know a lot more now than I did then... and still have plenty to learn. :-)

I used to be a car salesman and would be wary of what salesman tell you. Their living depends on getting you to buy a vehicle. If their choice is to lie to you or make their house payment they may not be truthful.

We talk bad about the RV salesmen, but how many times do you read on forums (this one and others), "a F250 is the same truck as the F350. the only difference is a sticker."

There is no consensus as to what is right. The people who look at all ratings are generally sure they're right and the other side is whacked out crazy. The people who are willing to tow over some ratings and use common sense think the other side is paranoid sissies.

At the end of the day, I think each owner needs to become educated on what their truck can do, the ratings involved, and make an educated decision.

And now I'll nope out of here before this becomes a weight police war.

Also something like:
"Yes you can tow this trailer with that (4750 dry).
No the new style explorer has a 5K limit
"How much are you going to carry?"

There are laws of accountability. In the end of the day it's on you, the operator. Get educated and research your interests. The salesman isn't going to be there when things go bad.

As for me we had the opposite experience. As soon as we said 5th wheel they all asked about the truck. Of course once you say dually it was game on.

At CW this morning I heard "you would need a bigger truck for that one". I had looked at it previously. Front kitchen, 1/2 bath plus all the regular and more goodies. Pin was around 2900 dry. More dually territory than 2500.

This is not unique to RV dealers. I was in a Motorcycle Dealer and a vertically challenged person was sitting on a large motorcycle being held up by salesperson because their feet did not touch the ground. Salesman smiled and said " You look great on that bike, can I write it up for you"?

In my opinion the sales people do not care most of the time. Both truck guys and TT guys. They just want to sell something. I bought my truck two years ago and I went to Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford. I didn't know what type of RV I was going to buy but I did know I wanted a 5th wheel. Both Chevrolet and Dodge all tried to sell me a 2500 verses the 3500 dually I was looking for.

Both of them said I could pull most any RV with a 2500 series

I ended up with a Ford F350 Dually with a Diesel. I knew it was capable of pulling 85% of the TT out there through the Rockies. Dealers do not care in most cases what you are doing with it.

most 3/4 ton trucks barely have over 2000 worth of payload rating. By the time you add the 5th wheel hitch, family in the cab, random stuff in bed, you have 1000 lbs left for the pin weight of the 5th wheel.
