1st TH! 27 HFS

Just picked up my first TH over labor day weekend! Took it out once the other weekend for a night of racing some Mx. good news is, the wife loved it! bad news is the gas tank wasnt filled, so we couldnt run the a/c :/ Although i did attempt to fill it up on the way to the track just to realize that its a royal pita to try and get any gas into it from the pump. Planning on taking it out this weekend for another race, but this time with at least 7 gal of gas in it...anyone have any idea how long the on board generator will last?

1st TH! 27 HFS

You need to figure out how deep the generator fuel hose is down in the fuel tank. Good average is 1/3 tank remaining and the generator will shut off. We can go a weekend on a tank with 15k AC running wide open. I always throw a 5 gallon can in the truck just in case.

I would run the generator till you run out of gas and then go fill the tank up and see how many gallons you needed to fill it. Estimate just under 1/2 gallon an hour for average use has been our experience.

Congrats on the TH!!

Different kind of setup OG. This is a fuel station / generator tank only. You can run it nearly dry with the Genny.

I'm confused. I am pretty sure that's all mine is on the 30fqsl. Can you further explain?

I have a fuel station and fuel tank as well on mine. It won't pull all the way to empty because the hose isn't on the bottom of the tank. I asked about it and they told me it was on purpose. I would prefer it using the whole tank, but have been too busy to change it.

Thanks for the replies!

And as far as the gas tube goes it definitely mist suck every last bit up I believe because the genny did fire, although a bit ruff, with hardly any gas in it for when I opened the slide and closed it. I dumped my leftover gas from not racing into so that it would have more gas at the track.

So since this is my first camper in general, anyone have any useful tips, specially toward having a 27 hfs?

I've ran mine down to red area on fuel station / never cut out - normally run it for 12hr a day for AC at a couple dry camps I go to - .5 hour seems high ---- I would say AC worked hard during the heat of day then maintaining in evening -

Why not fill it full and forget it - -

I also have had no issues filling - here in WA there is an outer plastic EPA hose that goes around filler - maybe that stops back splash?

Don't read any of WolfWhistles posts about his mods unless you want to get jealous and start changing everything in your camper like I did.

I'm still wondering how I got the shaft on having a short tube in the fuel tank.

OG, a short shaft, now that's funny, I don't care who you are!

I'm assuming, which I shouldn't do, especially since I don't have the Cummins Onan, that since the fuel station pumps pumps down to near dry, so would the genny. I have read that it does, no experience. Rule of thumb, a tank should not be ran dry since there is trash on the bottom (sorry stating the bloody obvious). Even when I empty a small can into the mower (for instance) the last splash goes elsewhere, if there's chance its dirty.

This begs the question, "why would you need the genny to run out of fuel, but save some for the fuel pump (for toys)? Maybe post a new thread and see how many members know if they can use the entire tank, via the genny?

It's not that I want to run it out of fuel. It's that if the tank is 30 gallons, I'd rather be able to use 28 on the generator. I'm stuck at 20 gallons. We hardly haul toys these days. Dealership told me it was to save some for toys and that they designed it this way also for not picking up the trash and sending it into the generator. Which isn't by any means a bad design, it's just coming from another perspective. It is a TH which should have toys. Our problem is when we use the generator it is for race weekends or other longer term (3 days or more) trips. For a normal weekend 20 gallons is plenty. At Bristol this year we went up Thursday and I had to add gas Saturday. I'd just rather have the ability to use more of the 30.

And while I'm griping....

The new dispensing caps on gas cans these days are a PITA, especially trying to fill up the XLRs tank.

Only reason Y I don't want to fill mine on a regular basis is I don't want old gas sitting in the tank for too long and gum up the genny...but it would be at least nice to be able to fill it up! Do you got a pic if that outer plastic hose your talking about?

I'll take a picture next time at the pump -- I guess I use mine too much to worry about bad gas 😛

I'd just put some stabilizer in tank when you fill it - and run it once a month

Stabilizer won't stop the gas from gumming (unless you're using Startron or something similar.)

Two words: ethanol free.

Yep.. We use marine grade Stabil in our tank. No issues. I try to get by storage every month and run it for 30 minutes. We get to camp year round and I use the generator while prepping at the house, so ours sitting around hasn't been much of an issue.

I use the fuel station for mowers etc, too.

Someone on the forum had an issue that was not getting 30 gals in the tank... Forget why... Anyone? OG maybe you are only getting 20 in the tank at the pump??

Stabil keeps my mower gas good through the long hard Florida Winter(tongue in cheek).

I pumped it all out one time filling up my brothers truck. I can hold 30 in the tank. I guess I am an anomaly with the generator fuel line. Oh well..

Here's another topic.. Do you guys dump the first cup or two of fuel coming out of the hose? I always try to drain it back before putting the hose up, but inevitably the gas when I go to pump for the first second or two is dark grey from the inside of the hose.
