We tow our 24HFS XLR behind our Touareg. Fully loaded (with 3 bikes) it is right at the top of her tow capacity. We went to Indy last year (12 hours each way) and had a MAJOR sway issue. I was white knuckled the entire way. Come to find out, I had too much tension on the W/D hitch and was taking too much weight off of the tongue. I fixed that and added a 2nd friction sway bar and now she tows like a dream... which says a lot given how short of a wheelbase the tow vehicle is.
Yes, it's the TDI. It has an 8000lb tow rating which is the main reason we went with it. It has all of the luxuries of an SUV, but the towing capacity of a 1/2 ton pickup. It is definitely a beast. Even with towing, we averaged around 20-25mpg on the way out to Indy. But the difference in length did create a little tail wagging the dog. But the 2nd sway bar along with correcting the W/D hitch seemed to take about 90% of it out. She tows like a dream now.
We tend to get off the point and highjack threads, I'm the worst; sorry. For instance why is Motel 6 common to your original post?? Its called communication and being friendly. So far, I don't have a problem affording fuel. Motorcycles that can pull trailers generally don't get 50 mpg. BTW.
