29hfs xlr hitch question

Good morning. This is a question for the owners of the 29hfs, what size is your hitch? The dealer sold us a Equailizer 4 1000/10,000 and my DH is starting to wonder if our hitch is undersized. He was surprised it wasn't the 1200/12,000. We are not hauling anything heavy in the garage but we added a battery and will carry the generator on the front of the camper, adding weight. Did they sell us an undersized hitch?

What size truck are you towing with? I amusing a Ford F250 with the Blue Ox WD hitch rated at 1000 lbs. tongue weight and 10000 lb. trailer weight with no problem.

My personal opinion (after some white knuckling with my first rig) is to get a lot more hitch than you need. My TV is a half ton Tundra and my 27HFS is smaller than yours, but I got a 12,000#/1,200# weight distribution hitch with integrated anti sway. Not I don't get nervous when a semi flies past us.

I'd think you should be fine with a 1000/10000 WDH. My Salem is 7600# empty and that's what I've been using to tow it. Your 29hfs is the same length and 600# lighter (dry.) The only issue I could see is if you put a bunch of weight in the garage and take a bunch of tongue weight off, but you're talking about batt/tanks/genny in front, so I wouldn't think that would be an issue.

Thanks so much for the responses. I talked to our salesman yesterday and he said we would be just fine with the hitch we have. We have a Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, 6.0 liter, but our concern was the 1000 lb hitch weight. We were worried the tw would be over the 1000 lbs and wondered if the hitch could handle the extra weight. We are not putting much in the garage other than kayaks, clothes, bedding, etc. We are taking a long trip across the US and Canada this summer so we want to be safe with the kids in the truck and ready to go.

We have the same hitch as you and have not had any problems. I did take the time to set the hitch up myself. Tows great no sway at all.

The thing about a TH is the towing situation can vary greatly depending on the weight put into the garage. With the light load you describe, sway should not be an issue at all. But if you were to load up the garage much closer to capacity, then the heavier 1200/12000 setup would be better. At least these are the findings with the 27HFS.

I had a lighter setup (round bar style) when I first purchased my 27HFS and it towed fine empty. But when I loaded my ATV, scooter and all the other crap, (Wife calls it a crap hauler instead of a Toy Hauler) then I was experiencing sway above 55mph. I switched to an Equalizer brand 1200/12000 hitch and the sway was greatly reduced. Then, a few months later, I switched to a 2500 truck and the sway was gone.
