A/C Question

I am camping and was curious.
It Is mid 90's high humidity.
The camper is new, the thermostat is set at 72. The ac runs for awhile and shuts down for 2-3 minutes and start again constantly. Is that normal? Seems like a lot of cycling for the fan and compressor.

Normal operation. Not sure of frequency/time of shut down but typically it will shut down so as not to freeze up. It will resume normal operation when freeze issue dissipates. Did you not get an installation/owners manual in your data package?

At 92 degrees ours seldom quits running. I don't think it is normal. I would get it checked before it costs you a lot if money.

Hi, Laurajean. You have the vent aiming at the thermostat... it has louvers at 180 degrees. Turn the vent in the kitchen away from it.

my A/c pretty much runs constantly also when it is hot out. If I lessen the cold controls to less A/C then it will cycle thru a few times. DW and DS love the cool air so we tend to keep it on the coldest setting the whole time were are on vacation. I turn on the A/C when we first pull in and it is the last thing to shut off before we unplug shore power.

I'm camping in the Florida sunshine this weekend, and mine will only shut off if I set it to 81 degrees. Anything lower and it just runs forever. I should have gotten a shady spot. In the direct sunlight these tin cans get HOT.

Unlike our homes, an RV's insulation isn't all that great, so once it achieves the stat temp and kicks off, it's more likely to kick back on sooner.

Also depends on how many folks are camping and/or how much the doors are opened and closed.

Since heat rises, the BR A/C in our RV tends to run more steady than the one downstairs.

At sunset I shut the vents at the AC and let the ducting cool the RV. At noonish I open the main Ducts at the AC to prevent the freeze ups. Your on and off modes are normal, keep in mind the AC is designed to cool 10-15 degrees from outside temps.

Thanks for all the good information. I didn't realize those cycle so often, even at night. I had it set for 72 while even at night it was humid and mid 80's. Run for 90 seconds, off for 90 seconds. . I did not get to move the vent away from the thermostat before we packed up. So that might help.

there are several factors involved which include the temperature and humidity outside. If your unit is dirty (coils), it will not be able to cool as efficiently either.

Another factor is size of the unit versus the size of the area needing to be cooled.

Basically everybody's situation will be different from yours unless it is the exact same rig parked next to each other under identical conditions.

But what you describe does sound similar to a rapid cycling condition which could indicate low coolant levels. But that is just an educated guess. mid-90 degree days are hard on the system.

Keep the door between the main room and garage closed if the garage room isn't being used. That room is not insulated like the rest of the trailer.

The cycling on/off of any heater or A/C is controlled by the Thermostat, you set the temperature. If it cycles early like your experience, its most likely a safety device or faulty mech/elec. device. It needs to be checked out.

If it's a Dometic digital thermostat there is a thermostat/furnace interface program procedure in the manual. Very simple, might try that.
