Black and gray water valves
Hey all, just dawned on me tonight when I was emptying the tanks on my hyperlight. My grey water valve for the bathroom tank is actually behind the black water valve! In other words, if I only want to empty the grey water tank, I have to open the black water valve. We all know what that means
Is this the case with all the hyperlight 29hfs??? Or is mine the special one Thanks for any help.

It's the case on all of them. My parents have a 29hfs and recently took it in for warranty work, after the salesman said it was incorrect as well. forest river denied the warranty work and stated that's how the trailer was designed...
Seems like a pretty dumb design......... It limits where they can camp, pretty much requiring them to have sewer hook up or take showers at te facilities

My 29 is not designed that way. I was built this summer....? Both gray tanks and the black emty into the same pipe of coarse. But I don't need to open one to dump the other. Do you have a picture of your setup?

If the dealer will not fix the problem I would change the plumbing myself. Gray water shutoff should not empty into black tank.

I agree with caper. If the black and grey are "in line" so to speak, I'd make the change myself. When we camp with full hookups we often leave our grey valves open so we can take full length showers etc. but we don't dump our black until the end of the trip. With your setup this would be impossible. Seems strange they would set the trailer up this way.

Attached is a picture of the current setup. I am going to try and take it to the dealer for repair, but if they won't do it. I will have to, since we plan on using it the way you mentioned. It seems really silly the way they set this up.

Wow, how hard would it have been for FR to put the black valve right before the grey outlet meets the main stack! Crazy setup but at least it looks rather simple to fix.... Hopefully it will be on the dealer's dime but if you do have to pay, it's a small adjustment.

Here is my parents set up, handle in the back ground is the bathroom gray , handle in foreground is black tank
My dad just picked theirs up from fun town on Thursday for the warranty work and was provided with the explanation that forest river provided of all the xlr being plumbed this way.
I agree it needs to be corrected, initially when he called their salesman about it he was told FR knew about the issues and that a couple units left the factory this way and they would fix it under warranty. When the time came he was told the complete opposite. Not sure who could be contacted to get a straight answer. I'm pretty sure their unit is a 2014

Looks the same as ours. Ours is a 2014. If they won't cover it under warranty, we will do it ourselves, just wish I had noticed it before we used the tanks

That is one crazy design. Looks like the grey handle is really hard to reach as well.

It is! I've cussed that grey handle more than once, for you have to crawl underneath the unit, and then when it opens you hit your knuckles on the frame there. Someone was taking the good stuff the day they engineered this setup.

If you have to re-engineer it yourself, perhaps you could use remote pulls. They aren't very expensive and if it's already all torn apart... Just a thought.

May have to look at those. By Remote do you mean the cable actuated ones from Valterra?
Thanks

Yep, they look just like what you have but a cable attaches to where the handle would be. Then you mount the handle on the outside skin of the trailer, through the frame facing the outside of the trailer or anywhere convenient with the included bracket. No more skinned knuckles! Here's a link to both the 3" and 1.5" units. Looks like you need one of each. Around $50 a pop delivered. Amazon.com: Valterra TC372 72" Flexible Cable Kit with 3" Valve: Automotive
Unless you wanted to go real fancy and do electric! LOL. Those are about $140 but not necessary for your situation...

Ah okay, yeah already looking at doing that, plus piping the grey water line for the bathroom into the grey water line for the kitchen, then using only 1 valve for the grey water, instead of the two it currently has. That's if I have to do it myself. The more I look at the current setup, the more I realize how idiotic it is.

If I was doing it I would leave Gray Valve alone and cut where it goes into black and extend it to a convent location and place new value where I could get to it

We have the XLR is our signature. While they could, with a little thought, done a better job of placing our second gray water valve, it works okay.
The design on yours is nothing but dumb ass. Glad you are getting some good suggestions on how to correct the issue.
It is great to see many more XLR posts on the forum. It was pretty lonely in 2010-11.

Sounds like a typical FR response to a warranty issue that they created. Deny, Deny and it will go away or stick it to the dealers and the buyer as a standard reponse.

Looks like the easiest way for you to fix this is to relocate the black valve back in front of the gray one. That said...
I took the plunge and installed electric Barker dump valve actuators on my unit. They work well--I was also sick of literally crawling under the camper to pull the gray valve--that was me getting too close to the sewer outlet in a cramped space if anything bad were to happen. Hopefully the Barker valves hold up over time.
